Join Romford’s World Alzheimer’s Month events this September – stories, support, and local action.
Every September, communities across the globe come together for World Alzheimer’s Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness, share stories, and inspire action. Here in Romford, our team at Home Instead is taking part by highlighting the real lives behind the diagnosis, from the voices of our Care Professionals to the experiences of the people we support. Throughout September, we’ll be attending local events, sharing personal stories from families, and taking part in activities that keep the conversation going long after the month ends. The question is: Why does talking about dementia matter? In Romford, we see the answer every day, it changes understanding, builds support, and brings hope to those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
In this blog, we’ll explore how Home Instead Romford is marking World Alzheimer’s Month, through community events, local stories, and practical ways you can get involved in making dementia care more visible and supported this September.
Launched by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) in 2012 and supported in the UK by Alzheimer’s Society, World Alzheimer’s Month brings together people affected by dementia, personally, professionally, or as part of a caring community.
At its heart is World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September, a date that urges us all, families, friends, schools, workplaces, and policymakers, to pause, learn, reflect, and act.
But it’s not just about dates and posters. It’s about real lives.
There are almost one million people living with dementia in the UK. Many more are affected as unpaid carers, family members, or close friends.
Yet despite being the leading cause of death in the UK, dementia is still often surrounded by misunderstanding and under-discussed. That’s something we’re determined to help change.
We know from the people we support that:
World Alzheimer’s Month gives us the chance to tackle those fears, open up conversations, and provide reassurance that help exists, and it starts with talking.
This September, we’re getting involved in meaningful, local ways that reflect our values and community spirit.
Here’s how our team is joining the conversation:
Throughout the month of September, care professionals and office staff will be wearing Purple to show their support.
We’ll be spotlighting Romford families and individuals who want to raise awareness. If you have a story to share (anonymously or with credit), [email protected] or call us on 01708 395040, we’d love to hear from you.
A quote from Kiran Agrawal – Owner/Director of Home Instead Romford & why talking about dementia matters to her:
Kiran said: “Raising awareness of dementia isn’t just part of our mission- it’s a responsibility. We see first hand how understanding and compassion can transform the lives of those living with dementia and their families. Awareness leads to better care, reduced stigma and stronger communities”
We’re hosting an information stand at The Mercury Mall Romford Tuesday 23rd September where we’ll distribute leaflets, free memory check prompts, and offer information about support options. We would love to see you 🙂
You don’t have to be a carer or a healthcare professional to make a difference. Here’s how you can get involved this September, right here in Romford:
Have you helped a loved one through dementia? Your experience might help someone else feel less alone. Share it online, on a community board, or with us at Home Instead Romford.
Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walks happen across the UK, including in nearby towns. They’re open to all and raise funds for support and research.
Whether it’s with a neighbour, a child, or a local business, talking about dementia helps dismantle stigma. One fact shared might spark the awareness someone needs.
A bake sale, raffle, or just a donation can go a long way in supporting:
Many community-led dementia events need helpers. If you’d like to support a Memory Café or distribute materials in Romford, get in touch with us, we can help connect you.
Residents can email or write to their local MP about improving dementia care and funding. Dementia UK offers free templates to help you get started.
A dementia diagnosis can feel daunting at first. But there is support, and there is hope.

Together, let’s make our community a place where no one faces dementia alone.
