Supporting the carer is a missing piece in standard care models.

At Home Instead, we understand that high-quality, relationship-focused home care isn’t just about supporting the person receiving care, it’s also about recognising and relieving the immense pressure on unpaid family carers.

The Hidden Strain on Unpaid Carers

Across the UK, there are an estimated 5.7 million unpaid carers, with some estimates suggesting the number could be as high as 10.6 million. These individuals often provide care without formal recognition or support. In fact, nearly three-quarters (73%) of people who currently provide or have provided unpaid care have never identified as or called themselves a carer.

The impact on these carers is profound:

  • 88% neglect their own health and wellbeing.
  • 65% struggle with their mental health.
  • 31% feel they are at breaking point.
  • 45% feel isolated or trapped by their caring responsibilities

Moreover, 62% of unpaid carers report having no choice in taking on their role due to a lack of alternative care options.

How Home Instead Makes a Difference

Our approach to home care is fundamentally different. We offer longer visits and companionship-led care, allowing us to take clients out for a couple of hours to the park, a National Trust site, or even fishing. This not only enriches the lives of those we care for but also provides their family carers with much-needed respite.

During these times, carers can rest, enjoy a peaceful meal, connect with friends, or simply recharge. This support is crucial in helping them maintain their own health and wellbeing, ensuring they are better equipped to continue in their caring role.

By recognising and addressing the needs of unpaid carers, we aim to provide holistic support that benefits both the individual receiving care and their family.

If you or someone you know could benefit from our services, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help.
