An afternoon or games, companionship and of course cake!
Starting on the 19th July, The Acorns Community Hub in Market Weighton is opening its doors for a new monthly event designed to bring people together and brighten up the weekends. “Social Saturday,” a friendly and welcoming gathering aimed particularly at older adults, will be held on the third Saturday of every month from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.
Hosted in collaboration with Home Instead Pocklington & Brough, a local home care provider, this new initiative seeks to address a very real and growing issue in our community: loneliness among older adults, especially during weekends.
Guests can expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with tea, coffee, sweet treats, and a selection of games available to enjoy. Whether you enjoy a quiet chat over a cuppa or a bit of fun with board games and cards, Social Saturday offers a safe and relaxed environment where friendships can form and grow.
The inspiration behind Social Saturday came from a heartfelt place. Rachelle from Home Instead, who came up with the idea along with Karen from The Acorns, says “the weekends can be a lonely time for older people who don’t have family in the area. There are lots of activities during the week for people to attend, but very little over the weekend which can lead to these being long isolating days. We’d like to improve that by encouraging people to come out on a Saturday afternoon and have a lovely time.”
Loneliness is a silent challenge that many older people face, particularly when routines slow down and family or friends are far away. While weekday groups and events are often well-attended, the weekend can sometimes feel like an emotional desert. Social Saturday aims to fill that gap, offering a place to go and people to meet on a day that can otherwise feel empty.
Mandy from Home Instead, shares that the team hold two other companionship events in Beverley and Hull each month, and have already seen how important these kinds of gatherings can be. “Even a short chat and a smile can make a huge difference,” she says. “It’s not just about passing the time – it’s about creating real connection.”
The first session will kick off Saturday 19th July from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, and everyone is welcome, especially those who may not have regular visitors or much going on over the weekend. Volunteers from both The Acorns and Home Instead will be on hand to offer a warm welcome, pour the tea, and make sure everyone feels at home.
If you or someone you know could benefit from a bit of company and conversation, why not drop by? It’s free to attend, and you might just leave with a new friend or two.
