Spreading The Word in Dementia Friendly Penarth

Spreading The Word in Dementia Friendly Penarth

In April, Chrissy who co-ordinates Dementia Friendly Penarth, along with Julie from Compassionate Penarth, Ruth from The Alzheimer’s Society and Karen with Lived Experience, all took to the streets of Penarth to talk to businesses.

As active members of the Dementia Friendly Penarth group, they were all keen to start conversations with as many businesses as possible, about the launch of the Dementia Information Corner in Penarth Library.

When someone gets a Dementia diagnosis it can take a while for it to sink in, and only afterwards do the myriad of questions start to appear.

That’s why we are keen to support this group and further its aims to make Penarth a Dementia Friendly Town, with easy access to local support and information.

We also hope to contribute to regular information surgeries to be held at the library, in the Information Corner once it’s been established – a chance for people to chat face to face.

One of the stories that came out of the day was shared by Karen.

She had cared for her husband with Dementia for several years, and towards the end of his life when he struggled to navigate his own home, or get into their car, he completely changed when attending their dance lessons.

As soon as the music started, his posture altered, and his ability to dance the practiced steps returned, which never failed to amaze Karen.

The Dementia journey is filled with ups and downs and at Home Instead, our Care Professionals have exceptional Dementia training and can support both the person with the diagnosis and the rest of the family throughout their journey.
