Loneliness will affect everyone at some point in their lifetime. This can have a big effect on your physical and mental well-being therefore Home Instead Cardiff, Penarth and Barry feel that it is important to combat this loneliness in the older population especially.

When we retire we suddenly go from a busy life with a daily purpose, to a slower one with no clear direction. This is a time when people can often start to feel lonely and at a loose end. If left unaddressed, they can start to experience low mood, and feel their confidence start to disappear, often feeling like a spectator of life, rather than a participant.

One lady who has ensured she still lives her life to the full, is Gill. She frequents many different community groups and is passionate about supporting an intergenerational group based at Cadoxton School.

Older members of the community meet with young pupils to help them to increase their communication skills and confidence levels. Gill says, “I get so much out of it, I love seeing the changes in the children.”

Gill used to travel the world with her job, but sees her retirement as a chance “to give something back to the community” and her joyful personality leaves us in no doubt that the community are benefitting from her generosity.
