‘If you don’t use it you loose it’ It’s a very common saying and there’s plenty of talk out there about how you need to keep fit and active to make the most of life well into old age. As you get older though joints get creaky and energy dips… it can be tricky to find something enjoyable enough to keep you both moving and motivated.

Keep your health and wellness up with some of these great senior-friendly exercise spots in and around Banbury, Bicester and across Cherwell North Oxfordshire. From , from a gentle game of bowls to some more energetic aqua-aerobics, there’s plenty to tempt people of all ages and activity levels.

Strength and Balance in Deddington, Tuesday 12.00 noon and Bicester on Monday 12.00 noon and 13.30 and Tackley Village Hall on Tuesday at 2.00pm
Five miles or so south of Banbury is the pretty village of Deddington. As you come to the Hempton Road traffic lights turn right into Hempton Road and the Windmill Centre is 1/2 mile on the left where the Strength and Balance session runs each Tuesday at 12.00 noon. The session in Bicester is at the Methodist Church, in Bell Lane Bicester. Sessions also run at Tackley Village Hall, Medcroft Road, Tackley OX5 3AH. The class is a combination of seated and standing exercise and can enable you to maintain health, mobility, and independence, to keep doing what you love for longer. Being active with similar individuals is also a great way to boost energy levels and general wellbeing.
During the sessions the tutor will incorporate strength and resistance exercises, which are beneficial for muscle, bone and joint health, and help to make everyday tasks easier. The balance exercises will improve confidence, posture and help to reduce your risk of falls. Why not give it a try…. It could be fun. It costs £5.00 a session.

Dance fit Banbury on a Thursday 2.15pm

This is held at the Royal Voluntary Service, The Cornhill Centre, Banbury Oxfordshire. It’s run by Paula Bailey who can be reached on 07779 929682 and [email protected].

The session is a fun and active class mostly standing and some seated to improve balance, mobility and coordination. A friendly group that also meets over coffee in local café. People who want to participate seated can be included. Teacher is a dance and postural stability instructor and uses a variety of music. It costs £5.00 a session

Banbury Short Strolls Tuesdays

These are short walks in Banbury from either Princess Diana Park, Banbury, Oxfordshire, Cherwell, OX16 0LS or Easington Park, Banbury, Oxfordshire, Cherwell, OX16 9HH. They are organised by Jim Smith who can be contacted on 07767 268231 or [email protected].

These are gentle walks for those getting back to exercising or who have limited mobility or longer walks for those who are fitter. They provide a great opportunity to go for a nice stroll and to meet new friends.
Times will also vary depending on those joining the walk. Therefore it is important if you are interested to get in touch with the Walk Leader, Jim Smith, so that the route and time can accommodate interested parties.

Get up and Go Brackley Leisure Centre

The new Get Up & Go activity sessions will provide strength and balance classes for older people. Get Up & Go sessions will consist of a minimum of a 24 week programme prescribed and delivered by qualified OTAGO Exercise trained instructors.
The Get Up & Gosessions are evidence-based activities for the elderly that will support the development of core strength and balance. The research behind the OTAGO exercises throughout the classes is proven to: – Reduce falls – Reduce injury due to falls – Improve balance & strength – Improve ability to complete everyday tasks, increase stamina, improve mood, improve confidence and independence.
