Growing Connections: How Our Clients Flourished through staying active

Discover how our homecare gardening project in Deddington helped 35 clients grow tomatoes and flowers, improve wellbeing, and connect through a WhatsApp group.

Gardening project 2025

At Home instead North Oxfordshire, we’re passionate about creating meaningful activities that promote the wellbeing of our elderly clients who receive homecare services from us. Each year we encourage clients to participate in plant growing projects (see previous years here for 2024, 2023, 2022).  In 2025, we ran another project for our clients in Banbury, Bicester, Brackley, Towcester and all the villages in between, inviting our clients to grow either tomatoes or flowers. The response was incredible—35 clients joined in, each nurturing their plants and enjoying the benefits of staying active.

Why Gardening Matters for Seniors

Gardening is more than a hobby; it encourages gentle physical movement, stimulates the mind, and provides a sense of purpose. For those receiving homecare services, these benefits are invaluable in supporting active ageing and improving overall wellbeing. These attributes are also a proven way to reduce frailty in older adults (see more information here).

The Impact of Our Project

Our project had a number of benefits for our clients:

  • Physical activity: Planting and watering offered light exercise.
  • Mental stimulation: Watching growth and learning about plants kept minds engaged.
  • Social connection: Sharing progress created a sense of community among participants.

To make the experience even more interactive, we set up a WhatsApp group for caregivers. This allowed them to share photos and updates on how clients’ plants were doing. It became a lively space for encouragement, tips, and celebrating milestones—bringing everyone closer together.

Our clients reported feeling happier and more motivated—proof that gardening for seniors can make a real difference.

Looking Ahead

We plan to continue offering homecare engagement ideas like this, because small projects can have a big impact. If you’re looking for ways to support loved ones or clients, consider community gardening for wellbeing—it’s simple, rewarding, and effective.
