Good quality care was provided for Mum over a period of approximately two and a half years. Efforts were always made to provide appropriate levels of care and appropriate carers as Mum’s condition deteriorated a little as time progressed. We were kept up to date on specific issues and there was a good cooperative and supportive relationship between us.
Daughter of Client, Letchworth, North Hertfordshire

My mother was given consistent friendly and supportive care over a 3 year period. Meals were prepared on a 3 times a day basis and shopping lists were prepared as necessary. Communication between Home Instead, Care professionals and myself was excellent.
Daughter of Client, Stevenage, North Hertfordshire

We were very pleased with the service provided by Home Instead for my mother-in-law. It was good to know that they were able to adapt to her changing needs, especially when she came out of hospital and needed more help. Communications were very good and I liked having the app so that I could see what had been done, and how my mother-in-law was after each visit. Thank you.
Daughter of Client, Hitchin, North Hertfordshire

My mum was, at first, hesitant to accept care, being very proudly independent, but then in came her amazing carers, and they enhanced her life and took the pressure off of me. The care and companionship she received were out of this world. Eternally grateful.
Daughter of Client, Royston, North Hertfordshire

The staff in the office were always pleasant and very helpful, and the ladies always turned up on time and were very caring and considerate towards my husband. My husband always enjoyed their visits and would chat with them.
Daughter of Client, Baldock, North Hertfordshire

On behalf of my extended family and personally from my mother and I, her daughter, we wish to thank you all so much for your support, kindness and professionalism in caring for my father. Your care pros are angels in disguise who have genuine compassion which is extremely rare to find.
Daughter of Client, Knebworth, North Hertfordshire

On approaching Home Instead North Herts for the care of my parents, a very thorough history was taken. This resulted in a highly individual and successful package. A small team of kind, thoughtful and hard-working carers carried out the care. They often went to great lengths to support my parents through trying times.
Daughter of Client, Hitchin, North Hertfordshire

As a family, Home Instead gave us confidence that our parents were provided with high quality compassionate care and the support to maintain their independence for as long as possible. I would happily recommend them.
Daughter of Client, Stevenage, North Hertfordshire

They really looked after mum so well and I had every confidence in them. The management in Letchworth were very professional and got in touch with me very quickly when necessary, as well as persevering with getting assistance for her from her doctor’s surgery urgently when I couldn’t. I would thoroughly recommend their service.
Daughter of Client, Letchworth, North Hertfordshire

A brilliant service. Same two mature staff apart from three occasions over three years. Nothing too much trouble. Flexible and person-centred. Kept my father living with dementia in his own home for much longer than we thought would be possible.
Daughter of Client, Royston, North Hertfordshire

The three ladies are always kind, professional, enthusiastic and patient. I have complete confidence that they are being well looked after by the Home Instead ladies, and the notes they write (accessed on my mobile) are very useful in keeping track of what has been happening during each visit.
Daughter of Client, Stotfold, Hertfordshire

Our family has been forever grateful that we chose Home Instead North Herts. The care he receives in his own home is not only efficient but above all respectful and warm. He has never been let down. He has become extremely fond of his named carer. For him, she is one of the family.
Daughter of Client, Letchworth, Hertfordshire

Words cannot express our thanks to the kindness, compassion, and care given to our Mum during her final days. The girls in your team are absolute angels and we cannot thank you enough. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Daughter of a Client, Letchworth, Hertfordshire

Really caring and professional staff. Would highly recommend using them. My mum was well looked after and the staff, one in particular, went over and above what was required. My mum was treated with real respect and dignity.
Daughter of a Client, Stevenage, North Hertfordshire

Having used other agencies we were very aware of the excellent care and management provided by the Home Instead carers. A lot of this is to do with the continuity of carer – my aunt had just one or two main carers coming in each morning. They were able to get to know her and she saw them as friends and looked forward to their visits.

Search here if you cannot see your town or postcode - What happens to nails as you age?
Nails tend to grow at a slower rate over time, decreasing by around 0.5% per year from age 25 onwards. For elderly people, nails grow very slowly, and studies suggest they can become thicker, more brittle, misshapen, and discoloured, developing a yellow tint. Without regular nail care, this can lead to pain and mobility issues.
- What nail disorders do older people commonly get?
Elderly people are more at risk of developing a number of nail disorders. Onychomycosis is thought to be the most common, representing around 50% of all nail conditions. It has a high recurrence rate in ageing adults, but can be managed with regular sanitization techniques. Another common condition is onychorrhexis, which causes nails to split and become brittle, flakey or soft. Ingrown toenails are also a regular problem for elderly people, resulting from infrequent nail trimming.
- How do you take care of elderly nails?
It can be difficult for elderly people to take proper care of their own nails due to mobility and dexterity limitations. Frequent trimming can prevent ingrown toenails and discomfort, cleaning can prevent fungal infections developing, and moisturising can keep nails and cuticles hydrated and healthy – at Home Instead, we can provide this as a regular service.
- Why is nail care important for the elderly?
Neglected nails can cause infections, and with a potentially weakened immune system, these can be more serious in old age. Nail care could also positively impact the mental health of elderly people, as studies suggest beauty therapy – including foot massages, as offered by our Home Instead service – can have psychological benefits that promote a sense of emotional wellbeing.
- How often should elderly people cut their nails?
It is advised that elderly people trim their toenails regularly. As a general rule this should be carried out every 6-8 weeks, but if you or your loved one’s nails tend to grow very fast, they may require more frequent trims. It is usually best to have someone inspect the nails regularly to identify any signs of nail conditions or overgrowth.
- Why do the elderly get thicker nails?
Nail growth slows down with age, and elderly people often have thicker toenails as a result of a buildup of nail material. Health conditions like diabetes and fungal infections can also lead to thicker nail growth.
- How can you prevent nail problems in the elderly?
Prevention is better than treating conditions that have already developed, and the best way to prevent nail problems in the elderly is to regularly inspect feet for illness, clean and moisturise, and trim toenails. Adequate, comfortable footwear should also be encouraged as sometimes shoe sizes can change in old age, so getting measured is important.
- Why should the elderly not cut their own nails?
Elderly people must exercise extreme caution when attempting to cut their own nails, as they may have reduced flexibility, movement and vision, making accidental injuries much more likely. This can make nail maintenance challenging, but professional nail care can reduce the risk of complications and keep nails healthy.
- Does Home Instead help people without mobility issues?
Yes. Our Care Professionals are there to help ageing adults maintain healthy nails and feet, no matter their age or level of mobility. You may wish to start a regular nail maintenance routine now to prevent painful nail conditions later in life, prepare for the future when you may not be able to manage them alone, or just to enjoy the rejuvenating massage provided during your visit – there are many reasons to start receiving professional nail care at home.
