Home Instead North Herts sees rise in enquiries from families looking for support for hospital discharge as they struggle to get elderly relatives home from hospital.
The latest stats find that on average, 92% of beds are occupied overnight in the South East. Key departments that are under pressure include general and acute illnesses, followed by people with learning disabilities and mental illness. Data from the Institute for Government found that one in seven hospital beds were occupied by someone eligible for discharge during the winter of 2022/23.
Home Instead North Herts has been receiving increasing enquiries from NHS discharge teams requesting domiciliary support to assist in freeing up hospital beds. Many people in hospitals are well enough to be discharged, but unfortunately, the discharge care needs cannot be met by state-funded care.
Registered Manager, Jo Hooper comments“We are excited about working more closely with the NHS and supporting more people in the community. We recognise that hospitals are under pressure and how important it is to get people home once they are medically fit to do so. Our post-hospital discharge care package includes personal care, home help, companionship as well are specialty care like catheter care, stoma, and peg feed (enteral feeding). We also manage the end-to-end process of the client’s medication. We are also able to offer more complex care like end-of-life care, blood pressure monitoring, and Parkinson’s disease care provided by Carers who have received additional training. We also offer Live in Care where a Carer can provide support for longer periods during the day and night.”
