Thanks to the Dementia Alliance Jesmond for hosting a Dementia celebration event at Jesmond Cricket Club.

A number of speakers were giving local updates and they were joined by representative from the local businesses who were supporting the Dementia Alliance.

Joining the celebration event was John Middleton (aka Ashley the Vicar from Emmerdale) who in the show has vascular dementia. It was an interesting perspective from the actor who prior to the show researched the matter and he has worked closely with the Alzheimer's Society who are advising on scripts to ensure Ashley's symptoms and diagnosis show a realistic representation of someone living with dementia.

In the UK alone, 850,000 people are living with a form of Dementia. It is estimated nearly 150,000 people have vascular dementia which is caused by problems with blood supply to the brain - for example after a stroke, or due to a history of vascular disease.
