If you’ve never used home care before, it’s hard to picture what it actually involves. Does the Care Professional just come in, do a few tasks, and leave? Do they wear uniforms? What happens in the first visit compared to the twentieth? What if your loved one doesn’t want to do what’s “scheduled”? For most families, the fear of the unknown is the biggest barrier to picking up the phone.

At Home Instead Monmouth, Abergavenny and Pontypool, we believe in being genuinely transparent about how we work. Rated 9.6/10 on homecare.co.uk and named a Top 20 Home Care Provider in Wales, our mother-daughter led team – Karen and Laura Clatworthy – have designed every part of our service around what actually helps older people live well at home. Here’s a proper look inside what a Home Instead care visit looks like from start to finish.

Before care begins – the free home visit

Everything starts with a free, no-obligation home visit. One of our team – usually our Care Manager or Client Experience Manager – comes to your loved one’s home at a time that suits everyone. This isn’t a hard sell. It’s a proper cup of tea, a real conversation, and a chance to understand what your family actually needs.

During that visit, we’ll typically:

  • Meet your loved one and take time to hear about their life, interests and preferences
  • Understand what a good day looks like for them – and what a hard day looks like
  • Discuss any medical conditions, medications and routines
  • Look around the home together to spot any safety points
  • Explain the different types of support we offer, honestly
  • Talk through costs and how visits are organised
  • Answer all your questions – including the ones you’ve been afraid to ask

There’s no pressure and no obligation to sign up on the day. Many families take a few days to think it over before coming back to us.

The care plan – built around the person, not a checklist

If you decide to go ahead, we build a personalised care plan for your loved one. This isn’t a corporate template – it’s a real document, written with your family’s input, that covers:

  • What kind of support is needed, and at what times
  • The medications and any medical routines involved
  • The person’s life story – the jobs they did, the family they raised, the places they’ve loved
  • Their preferences – how they take their tea, which shirt they always reach for, whether they prefer to watch the news or Countdown
  • Any specific goals – getting confident enough to walk to the shop again, keeping up with the crossword, seeing more of grandchildren

That care plan then guides every visit – and it’s reviewed regularly to keep pace with how your loved one is doing.

Matching – finding the right Care Professional

Before the first proper visit, we take time to match your loved one with Care Professionals from our team who share their interests, background and personality. If your dad was a farmer, we’ll try to send someone who’s comfortable talking crops and cattle. If your mum loves classical music, we’ll find someone who’ll be delighted to listen to Classic FM with her.

This isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the single most important thing we do, because it’s what turns a “care visit” into a friendship. It’s also why 95% of our clients recommend us.

The first visit – an introduction, not a task list

For most first visits, we recommend a slow start. Rather than diving straight into personal care from day one, we’ll often use the first visit as a proper introduction:

  • The Care Professional arrives at the agreed time in Home Instead uniform, with photo ID
  • They’re introduced by a member of the office team on the first visit
  • They spend time chatting over a cup of tea and getting to know your loved one
  • They look through the care plan together and check what feels comfortable
  • If personal care is part of the plan, they’ll often just talk it through in the first visit rather than jumping straight in
  • They’ll leave with an update logged in our Care App so the family knows how it went

By the second or third visit, most clients are already relaxed enough to get into the full routine. Trust is built one cup of tea at a time.

A typical Home Instead visit – what actually happens

Every visit is at least an hour long. We don’t do 15- or 30-minute drop-ins, because you simply can’t do good care in that time. A typical visit – for someone in Monmouth, Abergavenny, Pontypool or the wider county – might look something like this:

  • First 10 minutes – A warm welcome, a check-in on how your loved one is feeling today, and a look at anything that needs attention.
  • Next 20–30 minutes – The main practical support: help with washing and dressing, or making a meal, or supporting mobility, or medication.
  • Middle stretch – Companionship and conversation, or a walk, or a hobby, or a trip out – whatever your loved one enjoys.
  • Final 10–15 minutes – Tidying up, making sure everything’s in order, updating notes in our Care App, and a warm goodbye.

It’s never rushed. It’s never a checklist. And it’s never done at the person – it’s done with them.

Between visits – how families stay in the loop

Home care doesn’t stop the moment the Care Professional leaves. Between visits:

  • Our Care App – gives family members real-time updates from each visit, so you always know how mum or dad is doing.
  • Our office team – is on hand to answer questions, adjust cover, or respond to any concerns.
  • Our Registered Care Manager – reviews care plans regularly and stays in touch with families.
  • Our on-call service – means there’s always someone from the branch available if something urgent comes up.

Beyond visits – the wider Home Instead community

Being a Home Instead client in Monmouthshire also means being part of a wider community. Clients and families are warmly welcome at our:

  • Monthly Memory Cafés in Usk and Monmouth
  • Seated sports and gentle exercise sessions
  • Alzheimer’s Society partnership events
  • Local community gatherings, from the Monmouth Show to seasonal celebrations

For many of our clients, the wider community programme is as valuable as the visits themselves.
