Thinking About Returning to Work? Here's How We Support You Every Step of the Way

For many people, returning to work after time away can feel like a daunting prospect.

Perhaps you’ve spent years raising a family, caring for loved ones, enjoying retirement, or simply taking time to focus on other priorities. Now, you may be considering your next chapter but wondering whether you still have the skills, confidence, or experience to start something new.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

At Home Instead, we speak to people every day who are looking for meaningful work but aren’t sure where to begin. One of the biggest concerns we hear is, “What if I don’t have any care experience?”

The good news is that you don’t need previous experience in care to become a Care Professional.

What matters most is your kindness, compassion, reliability, and desire to make a difference in someone’s life.

It All Starts with a Conversation

The first step in our recruitment process is a friendly chat with our recruiter, Candy.

This isn’t a formal interview or an assessment. It’s simply an opportunity for you to learn more about the role, ask questions, and decide whether a career in care feels right for you.

We understand that applying for a new role can feel overwhelming, particularly if you’ve been out of the workplace for some time. That’s why we focus on making the process as welcoming and supportive as possible from the very beginning.

Getting to Know You

If you decide you’d like to move forward, we’ll invite you to an interview.

Our interviews are designed to be relaxed and conversational. We want to learn about you, your experiences, and what you’re looking for in your next role. Equally, it’s a chance for you to learn more about us and our values.

We know that many of the skills that make a great Care Professional are developed throughout life, not necessarily in previous jobs. Patience, empathy, communication, and the ability to build relationships are qualities that cannot always be taught, but they are incredibly valuable in care.

Full Training and Ongoing Support

One of the things that often surprises new applicants is just how much support they receive before they begin working with clients.

Our comprehensive training programme covers everything you need to know to become a confident Care Professional. You’ll also attend an induction day, where you’ll meet members of the team and learn more about the Home Instead approach to care.

Our aim is simple: to ensure you feel prepared, supported, and confident before you start.

Shadow Visits and Building Confidence

Before supporting clients independently, you’ll complete shadow visits alongside an experienced Care Professional.

These visits allow you to meet clients, understand their routines, and observe how care is delivered in practice. They also provide an opportunity to build confidence and ask questions in a supportive environment.

At Home Instead, relationships are at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we make sure you have the chance to get to know your clients before working with them independently.

In fact, one thing that is particularly important to us is that you’ll never be sent to support someone you’ve never met before.

We believe familiarity and trust are essential for both our clients and our Care Professionals.

It’s Never Too Late to Start Something Meaningful

Many of our Care Professionals join us after careers in completely different industries. Others return to work after a long break. Some are looking for a flexible role that allows them to stay active, meet people, and make a positive impact within their community.

What they all have in common is a desire to help others.

Every day, our Care Professionals support older adults to live safely, independently, and happily in the place they love most – their own home.

It’s rewarding work, meaningful work, and work that genuinely changes lives.
