From social opportunities and relationship building, hitting up local games, easy sports and other fun activities in your area can be a fantastic way to help an elderly friend or family member get some exercise and mental stimulation – as well as getting out and having some fun, of course. There’s more to life than cups of tea, after all!

When more energetic games and activities like skating or five-a-side just aren’t practical during those golden years, don’t resign elders to sitting around waiting on the next cuppa or new TV show – there are still plenty of ways to play, no matter how old or ‘able’ you are.

Forget Me Not Memory Café

Parson Cross Forum’s Forget Me Not Café is a community group that takes place every Monday and Friday 09:30-11:30, welcoming people with early or mid-stage memory loss and their carers or loved ones.

This café group offers a brilliant opportunity to get out, have a cuppa or a bite to eat, as well as providing invaluable companionship and support to people living with memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s.

As a national initiative, Forget Me Not Cafés “encourage carers and their partners to coexist in a social atmosphere, with no fear of embarrassment, misunderstandings, or judgement. However,  this particular café also strives to “encourage participants with early/mid stage dementia to socialise & network with others”, where there is also singing, arts and crafts, bingo and many more activities to get involved – aside from just having a chat with a friend!

Young at Heart

Organised and run by the Grenoside Community Centre for over 20 years now, this friendly group provides both a health and social opportunity for elders to get involved in every Friday at their centre.

As we get older, it’s becomes more and more beneficial to keep fit with regular exercise. No matter how big or small, physical activity has proved time and time again that it actually prevents the health problems that can come with age. Other than the fitness, it’s also a great excuse to get out there and have a good old chinwag with friends!

Young at Heart are always keen for to welcome new people aboard, maybe you’re retired and looking to keep fit? Get in touch on 0114 246 9053 to speak with Pauline, who will be able to tell you lots more about the club!
