Dementia Care: A Case Study in Compassionate, Person-Centred Support

This case study highlights the journey of an elderly, unmarried client residing alone, whose family lived too far away to offer practical help.

Following a stroke, our client made a good initial recovery, but a subsequent diagnosis of Vascular Dementia led her to appoint her closest friend, who was also her part-time carer, as her Power of Attorney.

Living with the advancing effects of dementia, our client’s doctor recommended specialist care, an idea she initially strongly opposed. Her friend, despite her dedication, found it increasingly difficult to juggle her personal family commitments with her caring role, often feeling ‘stuck in the moment’.

She genuinely appreciated the companionship and looked forward to each visit.

Ultimately, our client now feels safe and well in her home, secure in the knowledge that she has the right support from individuals who truly understand her. Her family, despite the distance, has peace of mind, knowing their sister can remain living contentedly at home, supported by compassionate and capable carers.
