A Life of Purpose: How Va’s Story and Her Home Instead Team Inspire Independence and Joy

Discover Va’s inspiring story: how a lifetime of care, community, and resilience continues with the support of Home Instead.

A Life of Purpose

Born in 1931 in Barnet, North London, Va’s life is one of purpose, resilience, and care for others. Now in her nineties, she continues to inspire those around her with her wisdom, warmth, and passion for helping others. Values that shine through in her lifelong career as a speech and language therapist.

Growing up during the war, Va described her childhood as “idyllic and privileged”. After her father’s London office was bombed, her family moved to Buckinghamshire, where life revolved around the countryside, animals, and close family bonds. She fondly recalls the years spent at boarding school in Hertfordshire, where she discovered a love for horse riding and made lifelong friends.

Encouraged by her headmistress to pursue a career in speech and language therapy, Va qualified in London in 1953. Over the years, she worked with countless children and families. First in Devon, then in Chichester and across local schools. Even today, she continues to support children part-time in a local primary school, a role she describes as “deeply rewarding”.

Va’s sense of independence and community has always been at the heart of who she is. After her husband Frank passed away in 1999, she continued to live independently and stay active in her village and church. She built a life full of friendships and purpose, a testament to her remarkable strength and positivity.

Finding Support When It Mattered Most

When Va experienced a sudden hospital admission last year, it was a shock to her and her close-knit family. Her daughter Trisha shared:

“Our beloved Mum has always been an inspiration to us. She’s lived independently since our father passed away over 25 years ago. So when she was suddenly hospitalised, it was a great shock. Despite being close as a family, we all have work commitments, and I’m the only one local. However hard we tried, we just weren’t able to meet Mum’s increased needs.”

That’s when Trisha reached out to Home Instead.

“I remember clearly the day I contacted Home Instead and spoke with Alana,” she said. “I’m a nurse myself, and I could immediately sense her understanding and professionalism. The relief we felt when support was arranged so quickly is hard to describe. The carers have been wonderful—and I know my Mum now sees them as friends.”

A Partnership Built on Trust and Compassion

Today, Va receives regular visits from her Home Instead care professionals, Donna and Jackie, who she describes as “kind, adaptable, and supportive.” Their visits provide the practical help she needs while also offering companionship and reassurance.

“The knowledge that they are there for my Mum is incredibly reassuring” Tisha said. “They’re reliable, friendly, and treat her with the utmost respect. It all evolved seamlessly, and the continuity of care has been invaluable.”

Va agrees wholeheartedly, adding that she’s grateful for her carers’ understanding and the thoughtful way she was matched with them. The support has enabled her to regain confidence and independence, something she and her family value deeply.

“I’m happy to say she’s independent once again, thanks to the fabulous team from Home Instead” Trisha shared.

A Life That Continues to Inspire

Even now, Va remains actively engaged with her community, cherishing time with friends, her church, and the children she continues to support through her work. She enjoys programmes like Call the Midwife and Gogglebox, often finding comfort in their humour and heartwarming stories of family and friendship.

Reflecting on her journey, Va’s gratitude is clear: for her family, her career, and the care that allows her to live the life she loves.

Her story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, independence and purpose can thrive at any age.

Just like Va, many of our clients discover that with the right care, independence doesn’t have to end, it simply evolves. Home Instead can provide the extra support needed after hospital discharge, helping recovery happen where it matters most: at home.
