Why being a Care Professional works perfectly around family life for Jemma

Now the kids are back at school, why not find a role that works around your schedule too?

With the school holidays coming to an end, many parents are starting to think about what’s next.

For some, that might mean finding a job that’s rewarding, offers tailored working patterns, and fits around busy family life. We spoke to Jemma, one of our amazing Care Professionals at Home Instead Lewes District and Uckfield, to hear why she chose this career and how it works for her as a parent of two young children.

What do you enjoy most about working for Home Instead?

“For me, it’s all about making a difference in someone’s day. I love visiting clients and hearing their life stories and experiences. One gentleman recently told me he had witnessed the Battle of Britain, and moments like that are so special and interesting.

I also enjoy knowing I’m making life easier for someone, helping them with the things they find difficult. Seeing them happy and comfortable because of the support I provide is really rewarding. It’s about bringing a little joy into their day.”

What’s your working schedule like?

“I’ve got two young children – a little girl who’s nearly 5 and a 3-year-old boy – so life can be pretty busy! At first, I worked evenings when my partner was home and could do bedtime. But then I realised I could also work while the kids were at nursery, so I switched some shifts to the daytime.

During half term, I let the office know and they adjust my hours so I can work evenings again. The role has really been tailored around my children and it couldn’t suit my family life better. When my daughter starts school in September, my routine will shift again, but I know Home Instead will support me through that change too.”

How does the role fit in with your lifestyle?

“It’s perfect. I don’t work weekends, which means family time is protected. My partner and I do banger racing on the weekends, so it’s great to keep that time free!

Before Home Instead, I’d worked in care with adults with autism and in a nursery, but I wasn’t sure what to do after having children. Joining Home Instead felt like a natural step and I already had experience, especially from caring for my nan who I lived with for many years. Supporting older adults feels really personal to me, almost like visiting her again, which I find lovely.

The training was brilliant and built on everything I already knew. The team is so supportive, and that makes all the difference.”

What would you say to another parent thinking about a career with Home Instead?

“I’d say go for it! The working patterns can be shaped around your family life, and it gives you a real sense of purpose. Even doing just a couple of hours in the evening works really well… It gives me a break from the chaos at home and lets me have proper adult conversations, which can be refreshing!

Plus, the office team, especially Sarah, are amazing at making sure your schedule works for your family. It’s the ideal role for parents who want something meaningful as well as manageable.”
