At Home Instead Knowsley and Liverpool East, we know that great care begins with knowledge and confidence. Supporting someone with a respiratory condition, such as asthma or COPD, requires more than just skill — it requires understanding, attentiveness, and reassurance. That’s why our recent Inhaler Training Session was so valuable for our Care Professionals.
The session’s aim was simple: to ensure all staff have the knowledge and skills required to understand asthma and support the service user safely and effectively. It began with a look at how the lungs work and what happens when breathing becomes difficult, helping staff understand the mechanisms behind asthma and COPD.
Asthma was a key focus, with discussion on how triggers can tighten small airway muscles, thicken the lining, and produce mucus — all of which reduce airflow and make breathing challenging. Care Professionals learned to recognise signs such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chronic cough, and cyanosis, as well as how anxiety can worsen symptoms. Understanding these indicators helps staff respond calmly and safely, providing reassurance while applying correct interventions.
COPD and emphysema were also explored, highlighting the differences from asthma, how these conditions are diagnosed, and approaches to management. Staff considered stable and unstable cases and discussed ways to support service users safely while helping them maintain independence.
Practical demonstrations were a highlight, allowing staff to practise using inhalers and nebulisers under supervision. Alongside clinical skills, the session reinforced key organisational guidance, including consent, record keeping, infection prevention, health and safety, and incident reporting, ensuring care is both safe and compliant.
Throughout the day, Care Professionals shared experiences, asked questions, and reflected on how to apply their learning in real-life situations. By the end of the session, everyone left not only with increased knowledge but with the confidence to support clients effectively and compassionately.

Training like this is more than learning a skill — it’s about empowerment. By combining understanding with practical ability, our Care Professionals are equipped to make a real difference in the lives of the people we support, helping them breathe a little easier every day.
