Helping Older Loved Ones Stay Safe This Winter

As the colder weather sets in, winter can be a tough time for older adults. Cold homes, icy pavements and shorter days can all make life a little harder — especially for those living alone. At Home Instead Havant, we want to help families keep their loved ones safe, warm and well this winter.

Here are a few simple ways to make a big difference:

Keep Warm Indoors and Out

Older adults can feel the cold more easily, so keeping warm is key.

  • Try to keep the house at around 18°C (64°F) or warmer.
  • Layer up with light, comfortable clothes.
  • Check that heating systems and electric blankets are working safely.
  • If heading out, wrap up well with hats, scarves and gloves.

Prevent Slips and Falls

Icy paths and wet leaves can be dangerous.

  • Keep driveways and paths clear, and make sure outdoor lights are working.
  • Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes or boots.
  • A walking stick or frame can give extra confidence on slippery days.

Eat Well and Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to eat less in winter, but regular meals and drinks help keep energy levels up.

  • Warm meals like soups, casseroles and porridge are great options.
  • Encourage plenty of warm drinks throughout the day.
  • If getting to the shops is tricky, think about online deliveries or ask a family member or carer to help.

Stay Connected

Cold weather can make it harder to get out, and that can lead to loneliness.

  • Try regular phone or video calls with friends and family.
  • Local community groups and cafés can be a lovely way to stay social — such as our Parkinson’s Café at Hayling Island Community Centre, or other local social groups.
  • Our Home Instead Care Professionals can also pop in for companionship visits, a chat over a cuppa, or help with errands.

Look After Health

Winter often brings more colds and bugs.

  • Make sure flu and COVID-19 vaccinations are up to date.
  • Keep medication in stock — and order repeat prescriptions early.
  • If your loved one feels unwell, get advice from a pharmacist or GP, or 111 quickly.
