Located in North Yorkshire, Harrogate was a popular spa town back in the day and continues to attract visitors from across the country. As well as providing some excellent examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, Harrogate also has some excellent pubs. Whatever your reason for visiting the town, nothing completes the day like a traditional pub lunch with your family.
To help you make the most of your visit to Harrogate, we’ve highlighted some of the best pubs to visit for a meal with your older relatives.
Formerly a grand Georgian manor, The Fat Badger has found new life today as a classy and well to do pub. As well as serving cold drinks on tap, the Fat Badger offers some of the finest pub dining in town. The dishes are all made from locally sourced ingredients, and made to a beautifully high standard. The Fat Badger isn’t somewhere you go for cheap and cheerful dining, it’s very much an experience in itself.
The pub itself is impressive, retaining much of its 18th century elegance. The interior is warm, inviting, and sophisticated. Subsequently, the pub is very well lit and free of clutter. If you’re unsteady on your feet, you’ll find moving about within easy. The seats are plentiful, plush, and look as though they’re made to be set by warm, roaring fires.
The Fat Badger is also adjoined to the White Hart Hotel, if you’re in need of a place to spend the night.
If you’re looking for something a little less extravagant, but still don’t want to slum it just yet, drop by The Timble Inn located in the picturesque village of Timble just outside town. Found within a beautifully preserved 18th century coaching house, the Timble Inn prides itself in offering fine dining in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
As can be found in the Fat Badger, the dishes are expertly prepared and presented. Lunches tend to be lighter and informal than the fancier evening meals, but even classics like the Sunday roast have been given an individual twist.
The pub is bright and open, and there is a beer garden out on the back for when the weather is fine.
Offering a more classic pub experience, The Alexandra is an imposing structure on Prospect Place. Be mindful of the steps leading to the main entrance, as they can be a little difficult to climb if your legs are feeling stiff. Once inside however, the building is warm and cosy. The atmosphere is a little more down to earth, and while the Alexandra does not sacrifice on style, it’s more traditional and familiar.
The Alexandra is quite proud of its history, and many of the paintings and posters up on the walls are historic originals.
The menu features all the pub classics, such as fish and chips, pies, curries, toad in the hole, and soups. As such, you’re guaranteed to leave the pub after your lunch full and satisfied, without creating as much strain on the wallet.
Dogs are welcome in the pub, and is within walking distance of the train station.
For those who like their pubs honest, local and traditional, then The Queen’s Head has all you could want in a pub. Found in an historic country inn, the pub takes great pains to emphasise its traditional nature. Offering a log fire, cosy furniture, and a wide selection of local ales and international wines.
The food is home cooked and has no thrills. If you want some pie and chips, a Sunday roast, or just a sandwich, then you won’t walk away unsatisfied.
The Queen’s Head is bright, well-lit and kept tidy. Walking though is easy and the pub is accessible over just a couple of steps at the entrance. There’s also a beer garden and patio available.
