Local home care provider launches free checklist to help families spot the signs of care needs

Home Instead Godalming has been out and about in the community, helping families access a new, free resource designed to support them in recognising when an older loved one may need additional help.

During Dementia Action Week, our Community Engagement Manager, Hamish, visited the Pavilion Café on the nearby business park in Elstead to share the Spot the Signs checklist with local residents. It was the ideal opportunity to open up conversations around dementia and the challenges many families face, particularly as we are seeing an ageing population and people living longer lives.

The Spot the Signs checklist is informed by thousands of conversations that Home Instead offices across the UK have every week with families seeking guidance. When asked about the concerns that prompt them to reach out for care, the top issues mentioned included:

Memory loss (70%)
Decline in personal hygiene (48%)
Difficulty managing medication (44%)
Changes in nutrition or weight (31%)
Safety concerns within the home (31%)

It is very common for families not to recognise the full picture, as the changes can happen gradually or get overlooked amid busy lives and other responsibilities. This simple checklist highlights what to watch for, helping you notice whether Mum is skipping medication or if Dad is leaving the oven on, so you know when it might be time to consider care.

Sarah Daly, owner of Home Instead Godalming, says:

“It’s natural for parents to change as they age, but we want to encourage local families to be mindful of these changes. Our checklist is a straightforward, practical guide that can help you consider whether it is time to start conversations about care.
Having these discussions doesn’t need to feel daunting. The key is to talk about it early, while your loved one is still fairly independent, and keep the conversation going so it feels normal and calm.”

Home Instead Godalming is here to support families in keeping their loved ones safe, well, and independent at home. You can access the Spot the Signs checklist and find guidance on starting these conversations by visiting Home Instead Care Conversations.
