From Companionship to Live-In Care: Supporting a Client to Live Well at Home

Starting with Companionship Care
Mrs B.C., a 78-year-old lady living in Fareham, was referred to Home Instead in July 2024 following a diagnosis of dementia. Her son recognised that she would benefit from companionship and light support to reduce isolation and help with daily tasks.
Care began with a few hours a week, allowing Mrs B.C. to remain independent while building trusting relationships with her Care Professionals. Early observations highlighted occasional confusion, anxiety and a history of falls, enabling care to be monitored and reviewed closely.
Over time, Mrs B.C.’s needs increased gradually. Care Professionals noticed rising anxiety, changes in appetite and increased confusion, which were shared with her son through regular care reviews. Her support was increased to include morning and evening visits for personal care and meals.
In August 2025, Mrs B.C. experienced a serious fall that led to a prolonged hospital stay and a short period in respite care. Following discharge, her mobility reduced significantly and it became clear that a higher level of care was required.

Live-In Care Supporting Independence at Home
Remaining at home was extremely important to Mrs B.C. and her family. After a full reassessment involving family, Care Professionals and health services, a live-in care package was introduced to support her safe return home.
A live-in Care Professional now provides consistent, round-the-clock care, supported by additional visiting Care Professionals. This continuity has reduced anxiety, supported familiar routines and ensured care is delivered safely and with dignity.
With live-in care in place, Mrs B.C. has been able to remain in the home she loves, supported by Care Professionals who understand her needs and preferences. She now spends more time out of bed, enjoys improved appetite and engagement, and benefits from meaningful companionship.
Her son feels reassured knowing his mother is safe, comfortable and receiving personalised care at home.
