The Power of Consistent Care: From Dependence to Independence

In June 2025, we took on a client called Harry who lives in the Exmouth area. Harry had recently returned home after a long and difficult stay in hospital and was feeling extremely weak and unwell. During his time in hospital, he had lost a significant amount of muscle mass, which meant that everyday tasks he once took for granted had suddenly become very challenging. When he was discharged, he found that he could barely stand without assistance and moving around his home was exhausting and frustrating. To make matters more difficult, he also had a temporary catheter fitted, which he found complicated and uncomfortable to manage on his own.

Initially, Harry was determined to cope independently at home, but it soon became clear that he needed additional support. Simple tasks such as getting washed, dressed, and preparing meals became too much for him.

His niece, who works for Home Instead Exeter and East Devon, had spoken about how much she enjoys her role and what the company does. This prompted her cousin, Harry’s son, to Google local home care providers. Once he saw that Home Instead came out on top, he rang them to see what they could do, keen to ensure his father had the help he needed to recover safely and comfortably at home and arranged for the package of care to be put into place.

Our Home Care Consultants visited Harry at his home to understand both his needs and his personal preferences. During this visit, they carried out a thorough assessment and worked closely with Harry and his family to create a personalised care plan tailored specifically to him. This plan focused not only on the practical support he required but also on helping him regain his confidence and independence as much as possible.

Home Instead’s services initially supported Harry with personal care, particularly during the mornings when he needed the most assistance. Our Care Professionals helped him with washing, dressing, and ensuring he felt comfortable and ready for the day ahead. They also supported him with managing his catheter safely and hygienically, something that Harry had been finding particularly difficult to handle alone.

Care Professionals visited Harry three times a day, providing consistent and reliable support throughout the day. During these visits, they helped prepare nutritious meals, carried out light housekeeping tasks, and made sure Harry’s home environment remained clean, safe, and comfortable. Just as importantly, they spent time with Harry, offering companionship and reassurance during what had been a very challenging period in his life.

As the weeks passed, Harry began to slowly regain his strength and confidence. At Home Instead, our approach is always to work with our clients rather than simply doing everything for them. Wherever possible, Care Professionals encourage clients to take part in tasks themselves, even if it is just small steps at first. This approach helps maintain dignity, rebuild independence, and improve overall well-being.

With this support and encouragement, Harry gradually became stronger. He started to take on more of his personal care independently and began moving around his home more easily. Eventually, he progressed to the point where he no longer needed to rely on his walker and was able to walk again with confidence.

After six months of support from Home Instead, Harry’s improvement was remarkable. His health had significantly improved, he had regained much of his strength, and he was once again able to manage his daily routines independently. His catheter had been removed, and he was feeling happier, healthier, and far more confident living at home.

By the end of this period, Harry no longer required our home care services. While it was sad to see him go, it was also incredibly rewarding for everyone involved to witness the progress he had made.

Harry’s story is a powerful reminder that home care does not always mean someone is declining. In many cases, the right support at the right time can help people recover after illness, rebuild their independence, and regain their confidence. For Harry, home care was a stepping stone on his journey back to health and independence, allowing him to get back on his feet and enjoy life at home once again.
