Home Instead Exeter and East Devon provide free talks in the community for organisations, groups and businesses across East Devon on topics such as scams awareness, dementia, preventing falls and hospitalisation and many more.

We offer an average of two to three community talks a month, with six taking place this January. With a considerably older than average population in Devon, these topics are very popular and relevant to the region we operate in. There are estimated to be 982,000 people in the UK living with dementia which is just a little bit less than the population of Devon.

Our scams awareness talks highlight the increasingly sophisticated fraud attempts by scam artists. Our sessions offer practical advice on recognising the warning signs and we hand out checklists for people to refer to if they think something may be a scam. We explain how to report suspicious activity and partner with local organisations to support those affected by scams.

The Training and Support team and Marketing team work hand in hand to present safeguarding talks to organisations who may support unpaid carers, volunteers or anyone who may need a bit of extra support. This is a brand new presentation which has been created for 2025.

Home Insteads dementia workshops are presented to families, friends and those who are early into their diagnosis of the disease. These talks focus on how to communicate effectively with people living with dementia, the symptoms, the different types of dementia, and the types of ways in which effective care and support can help. The sessions have been well-received by both family members and professionals who are looking to deepen their understanding of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Our presentation on preventing falls and hospitalisation remains as one of our most popular talks, as falls are the leading cause of hospital admissions among older adults. These presentations cover home adaptations, the importance of a clutter-free house, lifestyle changes and balance exercises, along with medication changes which can help prevent falls and reduce the risk of associated injuries.

If you or your organisation would like to book a free community talk with us, we would love to hear from you. Whether it’s part of a regular meeting, staff training day or an awareness event, we are flexible and happy to fit in with your needs. We can provide certificates to show that you have had the specific training, which you can display and show to the CQC regulator to prove that you have taken part in the relevant training. We offer the community talks all across, Exeter, East Devon, Mid Devon and through to Lyme Regis and will travel to you to deliver them. We can tailor the presentations to suit you and your audience. Please email [email protected] or call 01395 200600.

At Home Instead Exeter and East Devon we believe that shared knowledge is the key to supporting as many people as we can to live happy, dignified and healthy lives. We hope that by offering these community talks, we are able to build a safer and more compassionate community for everyone.
