Expanding our Capacity to Care

Plans to support the community in 2024

Our team at Home Instead Exeter & East Devon have always aimed to support the NHS via the development of care services that can reduce hospitalisations, aid prompt hospital discharges (reducing the widely known burden of ‘bed-blocking’) and ease pressure on local healthcare services.

As the only home care provider in the southwest rated as ‘Outstanding in all five areas of inspection’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), we’ve sought to adopt truly innovative practices in recent years, in order to support our clients and the wider community.

For example, falls are a prominent cause of unintentional injury and hospitalisation, with statistics showing that each year around a third of adults aged 65 and over will have at least one fall, rising to one in two for those over 85 years.* In 2017, our office collaborated with the South West Ambulance Service Trust (SWAST) in order to find a solution. This came in the form of the Raizer© chair: a powered lifting device which can be used to help non-injured clients from the floor, in a timely and dignified manner.

Following specialist ‘Traffic Light System’ training, our team put support plans into action with great success – so much so, that we purchased a second Raizer©, in 2020.

The Exeter & East Devon office have also developed highly praised services to support the swift admission and discharge of clients into and from healthcare settings, increasing the likelihood of positive outcomes through planning, attention to detail, and consistent communication with our counterparts in the sector. These include GP’s, Urgent Community Response teams and Occupational Therapist, to name just a few.

In addition, for 2024 our Leadership Team are investing in advanced training for our Care Professionals, enabling us to provide specialists healthcare services for clients, at home. Starting in the spring with the new ‘Nail Care at Home Instead’ service, we will be expanding our capacity to care via a planned programme.

“We are really excited about the coming year, not only because the development of our Health Care at Home services will benefit our valued clients, but also because we can offer further opportunity for career development for our team members. This is vital in our ongoing mission to professionalise the sector, offering outstanding care and rewarding careers.”
