At the heart of Home Instead are incredible people like Judy, whose kindness and dedication transform everyday moments into something truly special.
Judy’s journey into care began many years ago when she looked after her own mother. That experience instilled in her a deep passion for helping others live with dignity, comfort, and joy. She laughs that her husband calls it “martyrdom,” but anyone who knows Judy can see it’s pure compassion.
One of the people lucky enough to be supported by Judy is Edna. The two first met in 2021, and when Edna returned to the service earlier this year, their warm and trusting relationship picked up right where it left off.
Edna previously worked as a supermodel, and her appearance has always been a big part of her identity. But when she came back to us, she wasn’t feeling herself. A recent infection had affected her wellbeing, and she’d lost some of her usual spark.
That’s when Judy quietly stepped in with a simple but powerful act of care. Drawing on her hairdressing skills, she began washing and blow-drying Edna’s hair every week—never charging, never rushing, just giving her time and attention. And the difference has been remarkable. Bit by bit, Edna’s confidence returned. Her smile grew brighter. Her humour resurfaced. (And although Judy keeps gently suggesting a shorter cut, Edna’s sticking with her signature style, for now! )
Judy describes Edna as “funny, lively, and a joy to be around,” and it’s clear the feeling is mutual. Their weekly sessions have become more than routine—they’re moments filled with laughter, companionship, and genuine connection.
