Mary, a dedicated care professional here at Home Instead East Herts is known for her compassionate nature and unwavering commitment to her clients.

In her pursuit of providing exceptional care, Mary discovers an opportunity to uplift the spirits of her client, Rita. As she had been feeling quite down and low over the past couple of visits.

With their shared interest in visiting churches, Rita suggests that Mary should seek out the Thundridge Old Church.

So Mary embarks on a remarkable journey to Thundridge Old Church, encountering challenges and surprises along the way just to make Rita smile with some updated pictures of the church. And to see if it would be possible for them to visit it together one day.

“Day One:

I set out in my car to find Thundridge, which I had never heard of. I found it but it seemed to just be country lanes and nowhere to park, so I came home.

Day Two:

After extensive research on the internet and using walking apps on my phone, I planned where to park my car and set off again with a sure and certain four-mile walking route in my head.

I got lost, walked nine miles in deep Hertfordshire countryside, got drenched and frozen, and prayed earnestly that I would somehow find my car before it got dark. I did, just about!

Day Three:

I found out on the internet that somebody had flown a drone over the old church. Looking at their video, I was able to work out a bit better where it was -or so I thought. Wrong. Returned from another trip to Thundridge, defeated.

Day Four:

More hours poring over the computer/phone/walking apps. I felt I really did have a much better plan. I parked my car fifteen minutes out of Thundridge on the main road and walked to Ermine’s cafe.

Asked the bloke for directions. “Oh, it’s very easy to find” he assured me, and gave me directions. And low and behold, I finally found it! I was due to see Rita the next day so spent the night printing out photos and making an album for her.

Day Five:

Rita was delighted with her album. Says when she’s better we can walk there together. I said we could probably do it now as the path from the cafe could be done with a wheelchair.”
