3 Steps to Building a Self-Care Routine for Caregivers

These steps will benefit your role as a Home Instead Care Professional

As a Home Instead care professional, you play a vital role in making sure your clients receive the best possible care and support. However, it's not always easy to maintain your own well-being while looking after others. That's why it's crucial to take care of yourself so you can continue to provide quality care to your clients.

Understand what the term 'self-care' means

Self-care is the process of taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally.

This includes seven pillars, according to the World Health Organisation:

  • Knowledge and health literacy
  • Mental wellbeing
  • Physical activity
  • Healthy eating
  • Risk avoidance
  • Good hygiene

Self-Care

Self-care is essential for everyone, including our care professionals. By taking care of yourself, you will be able to provide better care for your clients, as well as feel happier and more fulfilled in your own life.

You may have a busy schedule that makes it difficult to prioritise self-care. However, taking care of yourself is essential to making sure you have the energy and well-being to provide quality care to your clients. Here are some simple steps to start building a self-care routine:

  • Eat well. Eating a healthy, balanced diet will improve both your physical and mental well-being.
  • Get enough sleep. Adequate sleep is crucial for your overall health, so make sure to prioritise bedtime and create a consistent routine.
  • Exercise regularly. Exercise is an effective way to reduce stress and boost your mood, so try to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine.

Preserving your energy

It’s important to ensure you have the energy to provide quality care to your clients. Here are some ways to take care of yourself while also supporting your clients:

  • Take breaks from your caregiving responsibilities when you need to. Spend time with family, friends, or pursue your own interests.
  • Consider activities that you and your client can do together. This will give both of you an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company and engage in new experiences.
  • Don’t forget to take breaks for yourself. Make sure to spend time doing things that interest you and make you happy.
  • Schedule appointments for both yourself and your client to ensure that neither of you misses out on important healthcare appointments.

Prioritise your physical and mental health

As a Home Instead Care Professional, it’s easy to overlook your own health needs in the day-to-day demands of caregiving. However, taking care of yourself is essential to ensure you can continue to provide quality care to your clients.

  • Regularly attend check-ups with your doctor and dentist.
  • Address any health concerns as soon as they arise to prevent them from becoming more serious later.
  • Pay attention to your mental health, just as you would your physical health. Recognise when you are feeling overwhelmed and take steps to manage stress and find support when necessary.

Thank you for reading. We hope you can see now why it is important to make self-care a sustainable part of your routine.
