What better way to break up the day than to take your elderly loved one for a munch at lunchtime? There are places a-plenty to choose from in East Hertfordshire.
If your elderly guest would welcome a change of scenery occasionally, why not arrange a delightful lunchtime date at a pub with your elderly guest? It’s just one of the many ways in which our professional carers at Home Instead East Herts and Uttlesford like to ring the changes a bit. We’ve chosen three of our favourite inns at Birchanger (near Bishop’s Stortford), Sawbridgeworth and Hertford. We hope you enjoy exploring them!
If you live in the Bishop’s Stortford area, a great place to visit for lunch is The Three Willows – a lovely little pub and restaurant at Birchanger, not far from Stansted Airport. The menu ranges from stone-baked pizzas, sandwiches and paninis to a ploughman’s lunch or jacket potatoes. For those who want something more filling, there are main meals with chicken, sausages, prawns, curry, cheese or gammon, and a selection of pies, steaks, burgers, pasta and fish dishes. There are also some very tasty and tempting home-made desserts!
The pub serves lunches between 12:00 noon and 12:30pm (although it remains open until at least 3:00pm) from Mondays to Saturdays. There’s outdoor seating available. For the restaurant, there are different levels with steps but there are some wheelchair-accessible tables. There’s also a toilet that is accessible by wheelchair but it isn’t a specifically disabled toilet.
The Hand and Crown is the oldest inn in Hertfordshire and is well worth a visit, as we’ve found out. Built in the 16th century, it was a popular venue for King Henry VIIIth and Ann Boleyn. Nowadays, it’s open for lunch from 12:00 noon to 2:30pm each day and serves a mouth-watering array of home-cooked meals in its restaurant, along with a wide choice of wines and ales. There’s also a heated, all-weather pavilion where you can dine outside whilst undercover.
You can find the inn in the village of High Wych on the outskirts of Sawbridgeworth. There is some wheelchair access through a door with no steps around the back of the pub, and staff will show you to a wheelchair-accessible table. There’s no specific disabled toilet but the Ladies toilet has a handrail and a disabled man can also use it if someone stands guard!
Another quaint 16th century pub is The White Horse, which can be found at Hertford – just across the road from Hertford Castle grounds. The log fires and low ceilings add to the cosy atmosphere. The lunchtime food menu includes a wide variety of burgers and hearty dishes such as sausage and mash, as well as fish and chips every Friday. There’s also a roast dinner available on Sundays.
The pub also serves a range of bar snacks from Hunt & Forage, including sausage rolls, scotch eggs, pork pies, meat and veggie pies and lasagne pies. The White Horse is open from 12:00 noon on every day except Mondays. The inn is dog-friendly and there’s some paid parking nearby.
So, if you fancy taking your elderly guest out for a relaxing lunch in a friendly pub in East Hertfordshire, we hope you’re able to try at least one of our suggestions.
