A Brief History of Dudley Castle:

Founded in 1070 by William the Conqueror, Dudley Castle is a classic example of a motte and bailey castle. The square keep, which stands on the motte, was rebuilt in the 13th century and features round towers on each corner. The Sharrington Range, a Renaissance Palace, was built during the mid-16th century by John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland.

The castle played a significant role in the Civil War as a Royalist stronghold but was later surrendered to the Parliamentarians in 1646. The keep and gatehouse were partially destroyed, preventing any further use as a fortification. The Sharrington Range continued to be inhabited, but a devastating fire in 1750 left it in ruins. In 1937, the site was transformed into Dudley Zoo, which continues to operate today.
