Home Instead Dorchester supports World Alzheimer’s Month 2025 – raising awareness and sharing stories.
This September, Home Instead Dorchester is proudly supporting World Alzheimer’s Month. Led by Alzheimer’s Disease International, the month-long campaign aims to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and encourage open conversations around dementia. The theme for 2025, #AskAboutDementia, invites each of us to begin with one heartfelt question. From that simple act, we can spark connection, understanding, and meaningful change. At Home Instead Dorchester, we are embracing this message in everything we do. Throughout the month, our team will be sharing personal stories from Care Professionals and clients, highlighting local experiences, and taking part in events that champion empathy and community learning. From story walls and Q&A sessions to social media spotlights, we are committed to amplifying the voices of those affected by dementia across Dorchester and beyond.
Now, as we step into a month of reflection and awareness, this blog explores why World Alzheimer’s Month matters, what the 2025 campaign encourages us all to do, and how our team and wider community are getting involved. Whether you’re a family member, a carer, or someone looking to learn more, there are many ways to participate and make a difference.
World Alzheimer’s Month takes place every September and is led by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI). Since its launch in 2012, it has become a significant opportunity for individuals, families, organisations and communities to come together to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that still surrounds dementia.
While World Alzheimer’s Day falls on 21 September, the campaign spans the whole month to encourage conversation, share stories, and support meaningful change.
The 2025 campaign is centred around two hashtags: #AskAboutDementia and #AskAboutAlzheimers. These aren’t just buzzwords. They’re an invitation to open dialogue, reduce fear, and help one another understand a condition that affects over 55 million people worldwide, and continues to grow.
Dementia remains one of the most significant health challenges facing families in the UK, yet it’s often misunderstood. Many people live without a formal diagnosis, and far too many families may not have access to the support they need. But dementia isn’t just a medical diagnosis. It touches every part of a person’s life, from their memory and communication to their ability to live independently and connect with loved ones.
In Dorchester and across Dorset, these challenges are real, immediate, and deeply human.
That’s why campaigns like World Alzheimer’s Month are so important. They help us listen. They help us learn. And they remind us that no one should face dementia alone.
Many people are still hesitant to talk about dementia. Many people still feel uncertain or hesitant to talk about dementia openly. But the more we talk, the more we learn, and the better we support one another.
ADI’s campaign encourages everyone to ask. Ask what dementia is. Ask what it’s like to live with it. Ask where to find support. Ask what it means for families, carers, and communities.
This one question, asked with compassion, can help someone feel seen. It can lead to an earlier diagnosis. It can connect a carer to services they didn’t know existed. And it can spark change on a wider level, from healthcare policy to public attitudes.
This year, the Alzheimer’s Society is also encouraging people in the UK to share their experiences. Whether you’re living with dementia, caring for a loved one, or working in healthcare, your voice matters.
Here at Home Instead Dorchester, we know the power of storytelling. Personal experiences help others feel less isolated. They also reshape public understanding of what dementia looks like day to day, not just the diagnosis but the moments in between.
We’d love to include stories from our own community this month. Is someone in your family living with dementia? Are you a carer who has seen the small but significant changes over time? Has someone in the Dorchester team helped you through a challenging time?
Get in touch with us this September. We’ll be highlighting local voices throughout the month, online and in our community spaces.
If you support someone living with dementia, there are small things you can do to make a big difference, especially during World Alzheimer’s Month:
A paper or cardboard tree can become a lovely way to share memories. Add leaves that list favourite places, songs, or sayings. These prompts can be comforting and spark valuable conversations.
Include photos, old coins, books, or household items from earlier decades. Take time to talk through each one; it’s a chance to connect and reflect on shared history.
This free app is full of nostalgic images and sounds designed for reminiscence. It’s a great tool whether you’re sitting together or supporting someone remotely.
Whether it’s a stroll through Borough Gardens or a route around your own neighbourhood, a memory walk can provide a calming activity and a chance to talk.

These special screenings are designed with comfort in mind, featuring:
The first of these screenings was a huge success, and we’re excited to see more opportunities like this in our community.

There are many ways to get involved this September:
World Alzheimer’s Month isn’t just about a single campaign. It’s a chance to change how we think about dementia, how we talk about it, and how we support one another.
At Home Instead Dorchester, we believe that every question matters. Every story matters. And every person affected by dementia, whether living with it or supporting someone who is, deserves respect, understanding, and support.
So this September, let’s not stay silent. Let’s ask. Let’s listen. Let’s support.
