Home Instead Client’s Wife Takes on Dream Challenge to Support Parkinson’s UK

Home Instead is proud to share the inspiring story of Helen, the wife of one of our clients, who is raising money for Parkinson’s UK while celebrating a very special milestone birthday.

Helen’s husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 17 years ago. Throughout their married life, the condition has brought many challenges, affecting not only him but every aspect of family life. As Parkinson’s progressed and dementia became part of their journey, everyday tasks became increasingly difficult, and plans for the future often felt uncertain.

Despite these challenges, Helen and her husband have faced each day with remarkable strength and resilience. Along the way, Parkinson’s UK has provided invaluable support through specialist nurses, a dedicated helpline and expert advice, helping them navigate some of their most difficult times.

To mark her milestone birthday this year, Helen is fulfilling a lifelong dream. On 4th September, she will be driving a steam train on the Severn Valley Railway. Her husband will be travelling on the train behind her, allowing them to share this long-awaited experience together.

This special day may never have happened without the encouragement and support of one of Home Instead’s dedicated Care Professionals. When Helen had almost given up on the idea because of the challenges of Parkinson’s and dementia, her Husband’s Care Professional encouraged her not to let go of her dream. She gave Helen the confidence and belief that, together, they could make it happen. Knowing that her husband would be supported throughout the day has made it possible for them both to enjoy an experience they had talked about sharing for many years.

Helen has chosen to use this exciting occasion to give something back to the charity that has supported them for so long. Through her fundraising efforts, she hopes to help Parkinson’s UK continue providing vital advice, reassurance and support to other families living with Parkinson’s.
