Winter Safety Tips for Older Adults

Helping our elderly loved ones stay safe, warm and well this winter

As the temperature drops, winter can bring a number of challenges for older adults — from keeping warm at home to avoiding slips and falls outdoors. At Home Instead Charnwood, we want to help families prepare for the colder months and keep their loved ones safe, comfortable and connected.

Here are our top winter safety tips for older adults:

1. Keep warm — inside and out

  • Aim to keep the home heated to at least 18°C (65°F) in the rooms most used.

  • Encourage wearing layers of clothing, as these trap heat better than one thick layer.

  • Blankets, hot water bottles and electric throws can provide extra comfort — just ensure they are used safely and switched off when not needed.

2. Eat well and stay hydrated

It can be easy to eat less during colder months, but regular meals and snacks are essential for maintaining energy and body heat.

  • Include warming foods like soups, stews and porridge.

  • Keep a supply of easy-to-prepare cupboard items for days when shopping isn’t possible.

  • Remember to drink water and warm drinks regularly to stay hydrated.

3. Prevent slips and falls

Icy or wet conditions can make paths and driveways hazardous.

  • Make sure walkways are cleared and salted where possible.

  • Encourage wearing sturdy, non-slip shoes when going outside.

  • If mobility is an issue, ask a neighbour, family member or your local Home Instead Care Professional to assist with errands or outdoor tasks.

4. Check heating and safety equipment

  • Boilers and heating systems should be serviced annually to ensure they are working efficiently.

  • Carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms should be tested regularly.

  • Keep a torch and spare batteries nearby in case of power cuts.

5. Stay connected and supported

The winter months can feel isolating for many older people, especially when weather conditions make it harder to get out.

  • Encourage regular phone or video calls with friends and family.

  • Look out for local community groups or day centres offering warm spaces and social activities.

  • If extra help is needed with shopping, meals or companionship, our Home Instead Charnwood team is always here to support.
