Spot the Signs: Recognising when a loved-one needs extra support

Caring for an ageing loved one can come with many questions, emotions and decisions. Are those small changes just part of getting older or the start of something else?

Why it's important to Spot the Signs

Many families struggle with seeing their parents’ health decline. The signs that a different approach is needed are often subtle—missed meals, increased forgetfulness, or a decline in personal hygiene. These ‘little signs’ might seem minor on their own, but together, they can indicate more significant underlying concerns such as cognitive decline, mobility issues, or loneliness.  Examples might include:

Missed medication
Unopened mail
Stove/oven left on
Cluttered house
Objects in random places
Drinks not being drunk.

Often these can be signs that more support is needed.  That’s why we have created a Spot the Signs checklist. It’s designed to help you take a step back, reflect on what you’re seeing, and gain better insight into your loved one’s health and wellbeing.

It will indicate whether it’s best to start exploring care options, and what areas your loved one needs help in. And just as importantly, the checklist is a way of checking how you’re doing. If you feel emotionally and physically well, the benefits will rub off onto your loved one.

At Home Instead, we can help guide you through how to approach the ‘care conversation’ and explore the next steps which are best for you and your family.
