Calderdale Stroke Support Group get active with help from Home Instead
Physical activities and games can help people who have had a stroke with strength, balance and mobility as well as boosting mood, confidence and social connection.
Back in April we were invited to Calderdale Stroke Support Group to run a games session at the Maurice Jagger Centre. Members enjoyed trying new activities including mini-golf, kurling and bean bag throwing (also known as cornhole).
Julie Ingham, Community Engagement Officer for Home Instead Calderdale led the session, encouraging members to have a go at each activity.
The group of over 30 people were divided into teams and points were scored for each activity. Shamsul Arafen, health Coordinator at the Stroke Association and volunteers helped coordinate the activities and we finished with a prize for the winning team.
Catherine Scoggins, Chair of Calderdale Stroke Support Group had this to say about the afternoon:
Home Instead, came along with a range of activities to make us all more active in an hour’s entertainment. The games were supervised by a leader or scorer who observed the teams until the whistle was blown and there was a winning team at the end!
“The group found the activities very interactive and inclusive. Everybody was able to join in and feel a positive benefit. It was something different and a lovely time was had by all!”
Julie Ingham added:
“Despite the physical and mental barriers experienced by group members, everyone got involved and had some fun trying the different games. I found it truly inspirational to see the challenges they had to overcome to take part.”
