Dementia Awareness in Basingstoke

In support of Dementia Awareness Week, Home Instead Basingstoke’s monthly training for May included a Dementia Friends session. Our regular visiting Dementia Champion, Tim Lowe, hosted the session in his usual thought provoking and informative way.

Many of our clients are living with memory loss or one of the various forms of dementia, and our objective is to do as much as we can to improve the quality of their lives and those of their family. To equip us to provide this support, over 50% of our caregivers have now completed a level 2 specialist dementia training course at Basingstoke College of Technology.

The course reflects the Home Instead ethos and promotes a person-centred approach to dementia care and support, including developing an understanding of the types of behaviour associated with dementia and of the factors that can influence communication and interaction with the individuals.

In addition to the level 2 course in dementia, our caregivers have completed courses in diabetes care and infection control, and five of our caregivers are currently doing apprenticeships and working towards Level 3 in Health and Social Care.
