What's on Where wow guide 2026 by Home Instead Altrincham Sale and Wythenshawe

Welcome to the 2026 What's on Where Guide

We’re delighted to share the latest edition of our What’s on Where (WOW) Guide for Altrincham, Sale and Wythenshawe.

For more than a decade, this guide has helped local people discover groups, activities, support services and opportunities to stay connected within their community. Whether you’re looking to meet new friends, try a new hobby, keep active, find support after a bereavement, or simply enjoy getting out and about, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in the pages ahead.

At Home Instead, we believe that living well is about more than care. It’s about connection, purpose, friendship and continuing to enjoy the things that matter most. That’s why we work alongside local volunteers, community groups and organisations to bring together this guide each year.

We hope you’ll discover something new, revisit an old interest, or find the confidence to take that first step towards joining a local group or activity.

So grab a brew, have a browse, and see what’s happening on your doorstep.

Five Ways to Wellbeing

One of the reasons we created the What’s on Where Guide was to help people take small steps towards feeling happier, healthier and more connected.

The NHS-backed Five Ways to Wellbeing — Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give — are simple ideas that can make a real difference to everyday life.

As you explore this guide, you’ll discover local groups, activities and opportunities that support each of these wellbeing themes. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, try something new or simply get out and about a little more, there are plenty of opportunities right here on your doorstep.

Small steps really can make a big difference.

The Dementia Journey: Taking the First Steps

Hearing the word dementia can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re supporting a loved one or concerned about someone close to you, it’s natural to have questions about what comes next.

While everyone’s journey is different, there are some common steps many people follow – from recognising early signs and speaking to a GP, through to assessment, diagnosis and accessing support.

The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to navigate the journey alone. Seeking advice early, talking to trusted family and friends, and connecting with local support can make a real difference.

A diagnosis doesn’t mean life stops. Many people continue to live well by staying active, maintaining friendships and remaining involved in their community.

You’ll also find local groups, activities and support services throughout this guide that can help people living with dementia and those who care for them stay connected, active and supported.

If you’d like to talk things through, our friendly team is always here to listen, offer guidance and help you find the right next steps for your family.

Kaye From Helping Thousands to Accepting a Helping Hand

When you meet Kaye Gardner, it doesn’t take long to realise that helping others has been at the heart of her life.

Kaye has lived in her family home in Bowdon for more than 50 years. A devoted mother to four children and grandmother to 12 grandchildren, she has always been deeply involved in her local community, dedicating countless hours to supporting others.

Around 30 years ago, Kaye founded the Voluntary Transport Group (VTG) through St Mary’s Church in Bowdon. The scheme was created in response to the difficulties many local people faced getting to hospital, clinic and dental appointments because of mobility or sight problems.

What started as a simple act of community support grew into something remarkable. At its peak, VTG supported around 500 clients with the help of 45 volunteer drivers and, over the years, assisted more than 2,000 people. The service not only helped residents access essential healthcare but also eased pressure on ambulance services and the NHS.

Kaye’s dedication to helping others was recognised with an MBE. One of her treasured memories is travelling to Buckingham Palace to receive the award from His Majesty King Charles III, then Prince Charles.

Her charitable work didn’t stop there. Kaye has supported a wide range of organisations including Sue Ryder, the NSPCC and St Ann’s Hospice. She also volunteered with PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service), helping people navigate healthcare services and find the support they needed.

Today, Kaye still enjoys keeping her mind active with crosswords and fondly remembers her love of painting, with one of her own watercolour paintings proudly displayed in her home. She also smiles when talking about her younger days as a keen runner and walker, including completing an impressive 11-mile walking race.

Family, friends and faith remain important parts of Kaye’s life. She enjoys regular visits from loved ones and continues to attend St Mary’s Church, where she values the companionship and sense of community.

Like many fiercely independent people, Kaye was initially determined that she didn’t want care. However, once she was matched with a small, consistent team she felt comfortable with, her perspective changed.

Tracy, one of our Care Professionals, visits Kaye several times a week, supporting her with medication, morning and evening routines, and helping around the home. Just as importantly, they spend time together chatting, sharing stories and reminiscing. Over time they have built a wonderful friendship based on trust, companionship and understanding.

Kaye’s story is a reminder that accepting support doesn’t mean giving up independence. Sometimes it means having the right people around you to help you continue living life your way.

Community Transport Still Making a Difference Today

Kaye’s Voluntary Transport Group demonstrated the huge difference community transport can make. While the scheme is no longer running, there are organisations continuing this important work across our area.

Trafford Circle Driving Scheme

Run by Our Sale West, the Trafford Circle Driving Scheme provides community transport for people who struggle to use public transport. Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to help residents attend medical appointments, go shopping and make other essential journeys, helping to reduce isolation and maintain independence.

Wythenshawe Good Neighbours Volunteer Drivers Scheme

Available to members aged 50 and over living in Wythenshawe, this scheme helps people access appointments and local services. Members can book journeys through the office and pay mileage directly to volunteer drivers.

Wythenshawe Good Neighbours are also actively looking for volunteer drivers and community volunteers to support local older people.

How Do You Know When Mum and Dad Need Care?

Watching a parent grow older can bring mixed emotions. Sometimes the signs are obvious. More often, they appear gradually over time.

Perhaps Mum is forgetting appointments, Dad seems less confident managing medication, or you’re noticing unopened post, missed meals or changes around the home. On their own these things may not seem significant, but together they can be signs that a little extra support could make a big difference.

The good news is that asking for help doesn’t mean giving up independence. In fact, the right support at the right time can help people stay safe, well and living comfortably in the home they love for longer.

If you’re beginning to notice changes, trust your instincts. Starting a conversation early can help you explore options before a crisis occurs.

Considering Care? Why More Families Are Exploring Live-in Care

When a loved one begins to need more support, many families automatically start looking at care homes. However, there’s another option that is helping more people remain independent, comfortable and connected to the life they know and love – Live-in Care.

Live-in Care provides dedicated one-to-one support in the comfort of a person’s own home. A Care Professional lives alongside the individual, offering personalised support throughout the day and reassurance overnight, while helping them continue with familiar routines and activities.

For many people, staying in their own home can reduce anxiety and provide a greater sense of independence. Familiar surroundings, treasured possessions, neighbours, pets and local community connections all remain part of everyday life.

Families often tell us they value the continuity that Live-in Care provides. Rather than multiple staff members, support is delivered by a small, consistent team, allowing trusted relationships to develop over time.

Live-in Care can also help families stay closely involved. Loved ones can visit freely, continue to take part in decisions and enjoy meaningful time together without the restrictions that can sometimes come with residential settings.

Every situation is different and there is no single solution that suits everyone. The right choice depends on individual needs, preferences and circumstances. Exploring all available options can help families make informed decisions with confidence.

Is Live-in Care Right for You?

Live-in Care may be worth considering if:

• You would like to remain in your own home
• You value independence and familiar surroundings
• You enjoy regular contact with family, friends and neighbours
• You would benefit from one-to-one support
• You are part of a couple who wish to remain living together
