Living Well with Dementia Events.

At some point, many of us will be touched by dementia

Whether it’s a partner, parent, neighbour, friend, or even ourselves. A Dementia diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but it’s not something anyone should face alone.

That’s why we were proud to support Living Well with Dementia events alongside local community organisations, health professionals and dementia specialists, helping families access information, support and reassurance closer to home.

Following the incredible success of the Altrincham event, we were delighted to bring the event to Sale, creating another opportunity for families, carers and individuals living with dementia to come together, ask questions, make connections and feel supported within their local community.

The event brought together organisations from across health, care and the voluntary sector to help raise awareness, improve support and encourage positive conversations around living well with dementia.

One of the speakers at the event was Dr Liz Clarke, GP at Washway Road Medical Centre and Chair of the Trafford Dementia Strategy Group. During her talk, Dr Clarke shared practical advice and insight on:

• Preventing dementia and reducing risk factors
• The importance of timely diagnosis and support planning
• Practical guidance for carers and families
• Building dementia-friendly communities across Trafford

Her talk offered valuable insight into the collaborative work taking place locally to improve support and outcomes for people affected by dementia.

Why Early Support and Connection Matter

Dementia is often described as a journey — one that can span many years and bring challenges, changes, and moments of uncertainty. But with the right support, information, and community connections, families can feel less isolated and more confident about what lies ahead.

Early intervention can make a huge difference.
It’s not just about medical care or diagnosis — it’s about:
💜 Knowing where to turn for advice
💜 Finding out what’s available locally, from one-to-one support to peer groups
💜 Discovering practical tips for everyday life
💜 Accessing respite and activities that give you time to rest and recharge

So many people don’t realise the wealth of services and groups ready to help — from local charities to support groups, carers’ cafés, memory clinics, and specialist advisors. Events like this Open Day can open those doors for you.

Let’s Talk About It — Together

Also at the Living Well with Dementia event we heard a valuable talk from Rebecca Trower from the Alzheimer’s Society.
Rebecca provides practical insight into:
• Recognising early signs of dementia
• Understanding the diagnostic process
• Brain health and risk reduction
• Supporting carers and families
Events like this highlight the importance of partnership working across health, care, voluntary and community organisations to help people live well with dementia and stay connected within their communities.

Dementia care should never be “one size fits all.”

Laura Muldoon, Operations Manager at Home Instead Altrincham, Sale & Wythenshawe, also spoke at the event, sharing insight into what high-quality dementia care at home can look like for families living across Trafford.

Laura explained how dementia care should never be “one size fits all.” Instead, support should be shaped around the individual — their routines, hobbies, personality and life story — helping people maintain dignity, independence and connection to the things that matter most to them.

She also highlighted the importance of staying connected to local communities, groups and familiar routines, rather than becoming isolated at home. From companionship visits and respite support for family carers to live-in care, Laura discussed how flexible support can adapt as needs change over time, helping people continue living safely and comfortably in the place they know best — home.

Importantly, Laura spoke about the ripple effect dementia can have on families, and how the right support can help reduce emotional and physical pressures for loved ones caring for somebody living with dementia.

Laura explained how dementia care should never be “one size fits all.”
