Liz was out and about in our community again using the What’s on Where guide last week and enjoyed popping in to meet the Sale Arts Society in Ashton on Mersey for some art appreciation and friendly chat!
The group Liz met were attending the Portrait Group, currently run by Juliet and Joan (pictured) as Barbara Van Zanten recently stepped down as Chair. With a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, the group are extremely friendly and meet weekly on Thursdays 10am-12noon. On this occasion they were drawing the portrait of a gentleman called Peter (pictured) who was sitting extremely patiently for the session!
The Sale Arts Society has a 70 year history, having been founded in 1944 by local artist Charles Holmes. It is currently based in the St Martin’s Church Hall in Ashton on Mersey and as well as the Portrait Group on Thursday, has another group meet on a Tuesday 2pm-4pm for the Still Life Group, they also have a small exhibition running there this Saturday the 11th July
Whilst there is currently a core of members and regular faces, both groups are actively looking for new people to join and enjoy the arts. Joan says no one is too old – typically the current age range is between 60 and 80!
If you love to paint and draw and would enjoy the company of other artists you are very welcome. Mutual encouragement, hints and tips are freely given if required. For more information or to enquire about the groups, then please contact Juliet Young on 0161 9622531.
