Alan and his team at Home Instead Senior Care, who provide at-home care for older people, have just completed a number of free Alzheimer’s and other dementias workshops for family members in Altrincham & Sale. The free workshops which took place during National Dementia Awareness Week were mainly attended by local people who care for their loved ones who have dementia and were extremely well received.

The ground breaking family workshops were adapted from the company’s City & Guilds accredited dementia training programme, specifically developed for Home Instead’s caregivers. They helped both family carers and community members to identify the typical signs of dementia and gain a better understanding of the condition, as well as arming them with effective techniques for managing the many different and sometimes challenging behaviours associated with the condition.

The workshops took place across Bowdon, Timperley and Sale and attracted 44 attendees, including Rev. Barbara Sharp from St Paul’s Church in Sale, Trafford Carers Centre Dementia Advisor, Lisa Cookson and Timperley Councillor, Neil Taylor.

The response from attendees was extremely positive, with key comments including, “the breakdown of symptoms and techniques for managing behaviours and encouraging engagement was delivered in a very friendly and easily accessible format.” , “I wish I had this awareness training when I cared for my mother ” and “very pleasing to see the desire to share good practice for no gain.”

Owner of Home Instead Alan Savage added, “I was delighted with the number of people who attended our dementia workshops and with the feedback we received.  As well as supporting family carers look after their loved ones with the same techniques our hope is that we can make the communities of Altrincham and Sale ‘dementia friendly’ so that people with dementia can continue to live well.  As such, further free workshops will be run in the upcoming months & individuals & community groups can enquire about these by calling 0161 870 1136, emailing alan.savage@homeinstead.co.uk
