Dispelling FIVE myths about working in care
You may have thought about a job in care or may even know people working in the sector. Maybe you’ve just picked up on some of the news talking about what it’s like working in care.
There can often be misconceptions about what it’s like and here at Home Instead Senior Care, we want to address FIVE common myths which have been answered by our CAREGivers themselves.
So, if the thought of working in care appeals to you (or even if it has never crossed your mind!) take a read of some of the myths and realities…
It’s just about personal care
No way! Not all clients receive personal care - in fact a lot of our support is companionship based or helping around the home with things like shopping or cleaning.
CAREGiver Sue Rushton said: “Don’t be put off thinking it’s just about bathing and toileting – yes there may be an element of this, but because we’re given time during the visits to get to know the client, it’s easier because you have formed that relationship with them and it doesn’t feel awkward.”
So, ask yourself this – would you hesitate if it was a loved one? Having that connection with them means that it just becomes part of caring.
I need previous experience or previous training to work in care
Not necessarily! If you don’t have care experience, Home Instead provides full training to become a CAREGiver. We recruit on values not experience. This training gives you all the tools you need to feel confident in your role looking after older people at home.
There’s also full support from the office which can be especially useful during the first few months, if you need, and regular assessments.
If you want to learn more, we offer bespoke training further down the line such as City and Guilds dementia training and end of life training. There are career progression opportunities and opportunities to develop new skills.

Will the care be rushed?
Absolutely not, we pride ourselves on person centred care. Firstly, our visits are a minimum of an hour so there is time to care at each visit. Rather than being focused on delivering ‘tasks’ it’s about what the client needs to keep them comfortable and happy at home and that can be taking the time to cook them a nutritious meal to spending time with them doing their favourite crossword.
Our schedulers also carefully plan the day of a CAREGiver to allow enough time to travel between each client.
Caring roles are only for females
Absolutely not! Care is a job for men and women alike and people of all ages and backgrounds. We have a lot of males who make fantastic CAREGivers – because we match our clients and CAREGivers, sometimes a male CAREGiver works well with a client so they can share an interest in sports or a particular hobby. CAREGiver Gil Marston said: “Many of my clients are male and we share a great bond together, we also really enjoy sharing similar life experiences.”
It’s badly paid and long hours isn’t it?
