What inspired you to become a Care Professional, and why did you choose Home Instead?

I wanted to make a difference in the lives of older adults, and Home Instead stood out to me. Their values aligned with mine, and the employee reviews were fantastic – it felt like the right place to be.

Can you share a memorable moment that made you proud of your work?

One of my most special moments was taking a client out for afternoon tea at her favourite café. Seeing her beaming smile and hearing her excitement reminded me why I love what I do.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I work 10-12 hours a week, by choice, and no two days are the same. My mornings often start with preparing breakfast, followed by light housework like washing up and cleaning. I also take clients shopping, out for coffee, or on walks to parks and garden centres. These little outings bring so much joy to their day!

What do you love most about being a Care Professional?

The independence, the companionship, and the ability to brighten someone’s day. Many older adults experience loneliness and being a friendly face and a good listener makes a real difference.

How does your job impact clients and their families?

Our support allows families to be just that – family. Instead of being full-time carers, they can enjoy quality time with their loved ones, knowing they’re in safe hands. We ease their stress and build meaningful relationships with both clients and their families.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

It’s the little things – helping with daily tasks, sharing a smile, or offering a reassuring hug. Those moments, though small, mean everything to our clients.

What would you say to someone considering becoming a care professional?

Choose the right company. Home Instead provides excellent training, great pay, and minimum 1-hour visits so you can truly connect with clients. If you want to make a difference in the lives of older adults, go for it – it’s so rewarding!

What qualities make a great Care Professional?

Compassion, kindness, a good sense of humour, and being approachable and non-judgmental. It’s about making people feel safe, valued, and respected.

Any advice for someone starting their first role in home care?

Take full advantage of the training, be open to learning, and connect with fellow Care Professionals at meetings and events. Most importantly, be yourself!
