How to prepare for winter months

Winter is coming.

Our lifestyles change with the seasons. It’s best to do some home maintenance before the cold fully sets in. After all, you don’t want to be caught unprepared. A little bit of care now could save you from repairs and frustration in winter.

Check for draughts around the edges of your windows and doors. A good way to do this is by using a lit candle – if the flame flickers there is likely a draught. If required, replace seals and fix caulking on your door and window frames.

Heating system maintenance. Inspecting your heating system every year is important to ensure it is operating properly for the winter. If you inspect it now, rather than waiting until the cold weather arrives, you will avoid being rushed and ensure that you aren’t left shivering in the morning.

Test your home safety devices after replacing the batteries in all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Clean your gutters by hiring a reputable company to remove leaves and debris as well as check for leaks.

Clean your fireplace and chimney. Although you can do this yourself, it’s best to leave it to a professional. Have the chimney cleaner check the damper to ensure it can be tightly closed to prevent drafts.

Store garden furniture. Clean your outdoor furniture and any cushions that go with it. Once these have dried store them in a dry place throughout winter.

Install rails if you have steps at your front or back door. You should consider fitting a grab rail so that you are less likely to fall when walking on a slippery drive or footpath to get to your door.

As you enjoy the changes in weather, make sure that your home is prepared for the coming months. Doing maintenance now will save money on emergency repairs and wasted energy costs throughout winter. When the winter arrives you and your home will be ready.
