Mick Sheehan, the owner of Home Instead Senior Care, who provide care services for older people in their own homes, will be competing in this summer’s Lakeland 50, a gruelling race covering 50 miles of terrain across the Lake District.

Mick, who has been running (no pun intended) Home Instead Senior Care in Oldham and Saddleworth for three years, has been training hard for the past six months. He decided to participate in the race as a personal challenge, but was also keen to raise money for a worthy cause.

In his daily life Mick works closely with many charities that are relevant to older people. Dr Kershaw’s Hospice helps individuals who are suffering from terminal illness but as with most charities, they are dependent on fundraising and donations to continue their work. Mick felt compelled to raise money for this particular charity, as it helps provide palliative care for patients with incurable life-threatening illnesses.

The Lakeland 50 is one of the biggest running and walking challenges in the world. The 50 mile course runs between Ullswater and Coniston, and has a time limit of 24 hours, with the fastest finishers aiming to complete the course in 8 hours or less. A punishing course designed to test even the fittest and most determined, it covers approximately 3100m of ascent and is almost double the distance of a marathon, run on rough terrain and often in difficult conditions. It is a challenge on a scale that often defeats even the most experienced ‘ultra’ runners.

Mick, who will run the race with two friends, said “First and foremost we want to finish, but it would be nice to get anything under 15 hours. It’s probably going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

Home Instead is an award winning national company who cater for the needs of the elderly in their own homes. Their tailor-made services are adaptable to the needs of individual clients and range from personal care such as assistance with bathing, dressing, eating and medications, to help with day-to-day housework and providing companionship.

Mick is hoping to raise a total of £1000, if you’d like to donate please visit
