Sue aka ‘mother hen’ loves to care

Sue Vettraino, a CAREGiver at Home Instead Senior Care in Norwich is a wonderful example of an ‘older’ person who says that CAREGiving is “perfect for someone of my age!” As a CAREGiver for the company, Sue visits her elderly clients regularly and helps them with their shopping, cooking, and other daily routines, assisting them to remain living independently in their own homes. She also provides them with the companionship that elderly people so often need.

Sue Vettraino, 70, from Norwich, worked at Norwich Union for many years as an IT Business Consultant where she was known as the ‘mother hen’ as she really enjoyed the social side to her job. When her IT work dried up she took an assessment with the Norfolk Careers Advice Service which suggested she might like a career in helping others.

This led to roles including supporting and mentoring offenders both inside and outside of prison. She also spent time supporting women with enduring mental health problems. Following her retirement Sue joined Home Instead part time and also hosts overseas language students visiting Norwich.

Sue says, “Working for Home Instead provides structure in my life. I have a reason to get out of bed and help others. I love the way Home Instead matches me with clients. I get to know them, build lasting relationships and have lots of fun and laughter. It’s a real pleasure and provides me with the feel good factor. My family are now grown up but I still have the desire to care for others and working for Home Instead allows me to do this.”

Chris Carter, owner of Home Instead in Norwich commented, “We are so lucky to have Sue as a CAREGiver. She is truly an inspiration, and everyone who meets Sue just loves her!  She is 100% client focused and is proof that the over 50s make excellent caregivers

“We match our caregivers to clients and many of our clients would like to be cared for by someone closer to their own age.  They have the life skills to understand the issues faced by those in need of care. It’s why we already employ many people who are over 50.

“Much of the work in the sector is part-time so is ideal for anyone looking to balance their work, family and social life.”
