Shirley became a Home Instead client in May after a spell in hospital following a fall. The fall had dented her confidence and during her time in hospital she had lost her ability to walk. When the Home Instead team began working with Shirley she needed two CAREGivers to visit four times each day and use a hoist to enable her to remain living in her own home.
Shirley’s sense of humour and determination made her very popular with her team of CAREGivers. They joked that they would have her “rocking around the tree” at Christmas.
The Home Instead CAREGivers worked closely with the community health teams to implement a plan to rebuild Shirley’s confidence and ability to walk. Over time they had Shirley sitting on the edge of the bed feeling the sensation of her feet on the floor, progressing to sitting in a chair and eventually standing once again.
Over a period of eight months Shirley’s abilities developed and one day she took her CAREGivers by surprise by setting off on a little walk. She is now able to walk from her bedroom to her lounge and enjoy her Christmas tree from the comfort of her armchair.
Shirley’s CAREGivers were so delighted they threw a little party to celebrate and invited her nephew Cameron, and Home Instead Managing Director, Chris Carter. Shirley demonstrated her abilities by rising from her chair, walking across the lounge and putting a gold star on the top of her Christmas tree.
Chris commented, “The team have found a real joy in this journey with Shirley. Through the humour and determination of Shirley and the team, Shirley’s quality of life has been considerably enhanced. We often work with clients to rebuild their independence after a spell in hospital and Shirley is a great example of what can be achieved.
“The joke about Shirley rocking around the Christmas tree is no longer a joke, it’s become a reality!”
