A recent survey by Carers UK suggests that over 2 million people have recently given up work to help care for a sick, elderly or disabled loved one. An on-line poll of over 2,000 people highlighted that nearly 1 in 4 people said that their work had suffered due to the strain and responsibility of caring for a loved one, with 4% saying that they had given up work and a further 6% saying that they had reduced their hours.
The survey comes after the 2011 Census in England and Wales showed one in 10 residents, a total of 5.8 million people, devotes at least part of their week to caring for disabled, sick or elderly relatives and loved ones without any expectation of payment with the hardest hit group being those aged 45-54.
For many carers they don’t know where to go for help which is where Home Instead Senior Care Telford, Newport & Bridgnorth comes in. We are able to fit in and work around family carers, providing a crucial back up to the support they give their loved one, whether for 1 hour a week to 24 hour Live In care.
Enabling the wider family to keep working and enjoying their interests and hobbies, can reduce the stress and feelings of lone responsibility that many family carers can feel. With more people wanting to love independently in their own homes for longer, we should all work together towards this goal but not at the expense of the health and well being of family carers.
