Lorna started with Home Instead originally as a CAREGiver back in 2015 but she quickly took on more responsibility in a more office-based role. Since then Lorna has excelled in her role as a Care Manager and was last month accepted by CQC in her registration to become one of Home Instead York's two, Registered Care Managers. University Research Study - Land

A New Social Care Study

Home Instead Senior Care York are delighted to be partnering with The University of York to give local people the chance to contribute to an important study. Many older people pay privately for social care. When trying to find that social care for the first time, some people find that navigating the care system to be a stressful and confusing process. Local authorities are expected to provide help and information to assist, but in reality, these ‘self-funders’ and their families are often left to ‘go it alone’. This can result in families making big decisions, at a very challenging time, with little or no support. What can we do to make things better? The University of York is looking at how people find, choose and arrange care, for a loved one or for themselves. They are looking to speak to families of older people paying privately for social care and/or the older person getting care and are also interested in speaking to people who might need care in the future. The University’s research will ask people what is important when they make choices about social care. The study will use a number of different ways to find out your views, including by phone and online. You may receive further information from Home Instead shortly, but in the meantime, if you would like to find more information, or would like to volunteer, please contact Rowan Jasper to find out more on or 07385 341573.

Lorna Follows Kerry In Gaining CQC Registration

Home Instead Senior Care York are delighted to announce that their plans to have two brand new registered care managers with the regulatory body The Care Quality Commission (CQC), have been a success. Last month the CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated home care provider shared the great news that Kerry Galloway had successfully had her application accepted to be registered and following this they wrote about how colleague Lorna Hoegh was also in the process of going through her application to join Kerry as their second Registered Care Manager. Home Instead are now able to confirm that last week Lorna had the fantastic news that her application had also been accepted by the CQC. Lorna & Kerry both joined Home Instead originally as CAREGivers back in 2015 & 2018 respectively. They quickly moved into Care Manager roles where they have excelled for over a year, managing the East and West areas of York. With two Care Managers registered with CQC, it means they can work together, plan for the future and ensure Home Instead Senior Care York continues to provide ‘Outstanding’ rated, person centred support to their clients.

Sorry To See You Leave...

CAREGiver of Home Instead Senior Care York, Daphne, came into see us at the end of last month as she recently took the decision to retire from her role. Daphne will be greatly missed by the office team and all her clients that she built up great relationships with over the last three years. Daphne was also a key part of our monthly 'Companionship Cafes', which we were hosting at Deans Garden Centre on Stockton Lane, before lock down. Daphne attended the event, to offer her expert support to those in attendance each month. We are incredibly grateful as Daphne has kindly agreed to continue to volunteer her time to support us when we are able to safely restart the companionship cafes. Wishing you a happy retirement Daphne!

Keep Cool This Summer

Most of us welcome the current hot weather, but for some the hot temperatures can bring along health concerns with them. The elderly are one of the groups who are particularly at risk of health problems. The main risks posed by a rise in temperatures are dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. To keep cool here are some useful tips: • Shut windows and close curtains when it is hotter outside than in. You can open them for ventilation when it’s cooler. • Stay out of the sun particularly between 11am and 3pm. • Keep rooms cool and have cool baths and showers or splash with cool water. • Drink cold drinks regularly but avoid tea, coffee and alcohol. • Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if you go outdoors. If someone does feel unwell, get them somewhere cool to rest. Give them plenty of fluids to drink and seek medical help if symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, weakness, dizziness or cramps get worse or don't go away.

Home Instead Planning for Two New Registered Managers

Home Instead Senior Care York, currently the only ‘Outstanding’ rated home care provider in York, this week took the first steps to having two brand new registered managers with regulatory body, The Care Quality Commission (CQC). Kerry Galloway (right), had the fantastic news that her application to be one of Home Instead’s registered managers has been accepted by CQC, along with this Lorna Hoegh (left), completed her application and is hoping to also be officially registered within a few weeks. Kerry and Lorna, both started with Home Instead originally as CAREGivers back in 2018 & 2015, respectively. Since then, through their hard work and commitment to the care they provide, Kerry and Lorna moved into Care Manager roles, where they have been for over a year now managing the East and West areas of York. Carol Hirst, current registered Manager of Home Instead in York, will be steadily reducing down her hours as she heads towards retirement, and so, having Kerry and Lorna registered now, means they can work together, plan for the future and ensure the York based Home Care Provider can continue to provide CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated, person centred support to their elderly clients.

Lock Down Birthday Celebrations for Client Margaret

Margaret, client of Home Instead Senior Care York, earlier this month celebrated her 85th Birthday. Unfortunately, given the current circumstances in place Margaret's family were unable to pay her a visit. They were however, incredibly grateful to receive a couple of photos sent to us by Margaret's CAREGiver Cath, which she took on the day. Despite the lock down measures it looks like Margaret still managed to have a fantastic birthday.

Local Musician Helps Client Celebrate Her Birthday

Home Instead Senior Care York CAREGiver Maz, helped organise a birthday gift for her client Ann, earlier this week. To celebrate Ann's birthday, Maz organised for local musician, Dan to come, sing and play his guitar for her, while Ann sat in her garden enjoying the beautiful spring sunshine. Ann was absolutely thrilled and her neighbours even joined in and applauded from their own gardens. This government approved scheme, adhered to the social distancing measures we currently have in place at all times. Huge thanks to Dan for giving us his time and playing and to Maz for organising such a special birthday treat.
