Music Mends Minds Launches in Tavistock

Tavistock Rotary in collaboration with Home Instead, a Tavistock based Home Care Company are launching a Music Mends Minds group in support of those living with Dementia, Parkinson’s, acquired brain injuries, PTSD, or those living with the after effects of a stroke. This will be the first time this programme has been run in the UK. Music Mends Minds originated in the US and has proven to be a very successful programme supported by the Rotary clubs. Music has been proven to soothe, stimulate, and even unlock long-forgotten memories in people living with neurological conditions. We have all experienced that feeling of being transported back to a place or time from our past through a piece of music or a song, but for people with neurological conditions that experience can be particularly magical. Research has also shown that memories of popular songs can activate very specific areas of the brain, which seem to be particularly resistant to the damaging effects of dementia and other neurological conditions. This means that people who struggle to recognise family members, or even remember their own name, can often recall all the words to their favourite songs. The launch of MMM takes place at 2pm on 6th March at the Methodist Church Hall in Tavistock, and will run the first Wednesday of each month following. Norrie Philip- President of Tavistock Rotary said “We are delighted to be the first Rotary club in the UK to introduce this wonderful community project to Tavistock. We welcome you to come and make music with us and bring joy and happiness back into your life! Come and join us, sing songs, play instruments and enjoy a cup of tea. We thank Home Instead, for agreeing to work in partnership with us. For more information call Chris Ellis on 01822 616507 or visit https://www.homeinstead.co.uk/tavistock-tamar-valley
