With the issues of long-term care and retirement planning never far from the news, Stockport Oddfellows Branch recently decided to hold an event aiming to support and encourage older people and their families to prepare positively for the future.
The free event, held last month at a social club in Cheadle Hulme, showcased positive models of care and housing options available locally with guest speakers David Moore from Home Instead Senior Care and Mark Elliot from the Johnnie Johnson Housing Trust. Those attending also had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the issue of social care and housing in later years with the speakers over refreshments.
The speakers stressed the importance of thinking about what sort of lifestyle, housing and support people wanted in older age and to find out in good time about what options are available. David Moore from Home Instead said, “All too often people end up having to find care provision in a crisis which rarely leads to the best solution or people assume they have to go into a residential home when there may be other options through care at home or supported housing.” Mary Atkinson, from the Oddfellows Care Department, also talked about the difficulties people can face in finding their way through the system to access the care and support they need and highlighted the help available to Oddfellows members from short term convalescence to guidance through the care system. Oddfellows work in partnership with local Home Instead Offices to provide respite and convalescence care to their members as part of their package of benefits.
