Memory Walk is the inclusive and inspiring highlight of Alzheimer`s Society`s fundraising calendar. During September and October every year, hundreds of Community memory walks are staged around the UK by local communities and organisations.
In Southend, our walk will be on Sunday 14th September and people have been working hard behind the scenes to create a rather special event - perfect for families, couples, individuals and it`s even dog friendly.
We will start at Cliffs Pavillion and walk past the Westcliff hotel and the site of the old bandstand. The route continues past the Park Inn Hotel and St John`s Church until we reach the Kursaal. The route back is along the seafront taking in all the atmosphere of Southend - the Pier, the Arches cafes. Lots of memories and lots of opportunities to reminisce.
This walk is to raise money for work being done by Alzheimer`s Society but it is also to raise awareness of the great work that is being done in Southend by a whole host of groups, all with one aim to help people with dementia live well.
We have designed the day to be as dementia friendly as possible, while there will be an official start, we are making it very clear that groups especially that include a person with dementia can start when they are ready. If individuals do not want to complete the route there is no obligation at all to continue and we have several suggested shorter routes and short cuts.
The day is aimed to be relaxed, to be fun and to look at some of the fantastic heritage and memories that Southend has to offer.
